The usual arguments for the greatest footballers vary massively on thing like trophies won, how long they were at the top of their game etc. For example Ronaldinho's peak was a flash in the pan. I would never usually have him in the debate for the greatest ever. So I want to know who does everyone think was the best player ever at their absolute best, even if that was short, even if they won no trophies.
Brazilian Ronaldo for me. Don't think there has ever been a better dribbler & that is my favourite attribute.

Too many to just choose one for me so without mentioning the usual world class names, For me its players like Pirlo, Iniesta or Scholes.
World class talent that was carried over numerous years amongst other world class talent that still made them stand out. Instead of players like Gerrard who was basically just polished turd in the middle of a shit factory.

Feel free to shoot it down. De Gea. I don't watcj Neur every week but for me De Gea is the best in my lifetime. Unbelievable keeper.

Edson Arantes do Nascimento, or better known as Pelé. Always has and always will be for an old git like me. Only ever played for his country Brazil, Santos and New York Cosmos. Grew up in poverty and would kick a tin can around the beaches of Brazil until he was spotted by Santos as a 15 year old and that's where the story begins.

original ronaldo was the best.
the 2/3 years of his peak he was unstoppable. he had everything; speed, strength, fantastic dribbling control, immense skill and finishing. standing ovation at OT after his hattrick.
i personally loved, and still love ronaldinho. supremely talented and always had a grin from ear to ear. he added a bit more fun and swagger to the game and i don't think there has been anyone like him since he retired (ish, he's probably still doing his world tour of 6-month contracts somewhere in india)

Zidane. Privileged to have seen him play live. Effortless.

Cristiano in 2013-15.
I always say in the 'greatest of all time' debates that between Pele, Maradona, Messi and C. Ronaldo there aren't any wrong answers. They're all insane and probably very close to eachother in terms of raw talent & ability. I was too young to see the first 2 but their quality is clear regardless.
Answers like Ronaldo (Brazil), Ronaldinho, Scholes (as much as I love him) - these are all top, top, top players (Jeff) but I don't think anyone touches those 4. Even Cruyff, Puskas, Di Stefano, Best (I know I wasn't there) - all wonderful players, but those four just stand above the rest.
I understand this isn't a standard 'GOAT' thread and the peak thing - throwing away the consistency aspect which is so key to the usual debate - opens up the discussion a lot. But I'd still plump for one of those 4.

Of the players I've actually seen- Maradona by an absolute mile. See I was wondering if I'd get many Maradonna's or Pele's as they are largely judged on their contributions over the years and to their world cup wins. When I watch highlights I get a lot more excited by others players. Not saying it's wrong. Just one of the reasons i was interested in a thread like this.
