Exciting signing. I love Mourinho's quote about him having the potential to be "one of the best around". Mourinho has a good track record when it comes to developing young defenders and the guy has all the physical attributes to succeed in the Premier League. There was a nice article in one of the papers about Bailly to the effect his meteoric rise is because it never takes him very long to impress people and rises to every new challenge. So I think like Martial he'll settle right in and won't be phased by the pressure.

www.football365.com/news/lawro-defends-utd-on-bailly-overspending-accusationsLawro defending the signing! Manchester United have been accused of overpaying for Eric Bailly – although Mark Lawrenson has praised the deal. United completed the signing of defender Bailly for a reported £30m fee on Wednesday, with the centre-half joining from La Liga side Villarreal. The 22-year-old is the club’s first signing under the management of Jose Mourinho, but many feel that the price for the Ivorian, who has played just 40 competitive league games, is too much. Not quite Anthony Martial’s ‘WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY’, but too much nonetheless. Speaking to BBC Radio 5 live, Italian football journalist Gabriele Marcotti accused United of spending too much on a player with little more than “tremendous potential”. “My understanding is we are talking about a very young player,” Marcotti said. “He is young in terms of experience. Even at Espanyol they felt that he was raw but had tremendous potential. “He’s athletic, he works hard and he’s grown tactically at Villarreal in that last three or four months of the season. “You talk about numbers and the fee – it seems way over the top. If he is £30m, you wonder, another young defender from La Liga, like Aymeric Laporte, who actually has three or four seasons under his belt, how much is he worth? “My understanding is that he is not going to be somebody who is going to go straight into the starting XI, and I think United and Mourinho would still like to bring in another, perhaps more accomplished, centre-back.” Former Liverpool defender Lawrenson then defended the deal, claiming that Bailly has all the necessary attributes to be a success in England. “I think he’s got a real chance of being a top player eventually,” said Lawrenson. “We saw him that night at Villarreal versus Liverpool. He missed the second leg with a hamstring injury. You talk about the fee but what’s Stones going to go for? And this is a guy who has generally made a mistake every two or three games in the Premier League. “The fella Bailly – the great thing about him is that he’s got a great physique; he is lightning, lightning quick. So, in that position, it allows you to make a mistake but to get that mistake back. “I don’t see any problems. He is very physical, and if you sign a centre-back for the Premier League he has to be physical.”

I think Lawro may be slightly underrated nowadays. Everyone takes the piss of his predictions and its true some are odd (he didn't predict a single 0-0 all year) but I read somewhere if you put a £100 bet on each one you would have come out about £4k up.

There was an interview with one of the best scouts here in Norway Stig Thorbjoernsen. He seen him several times when he was at Espanyol and Villarreal. What I can say is that he is as good as Mourinho claim. Bailly is complete. He has raw physics, is good in the air and good with the ball. He has no weaknesses.
Eliaquim Mangala cost about the same when Manchester City brought him from Porto in 2014. The Co-operation so far has not been a symbiosis. Torbjørnsen believes Bailly is located in a completely different class than the rival in Manchester city.
- Mangala was also expensive and so far has not defended price tag. Bailly is much better: he is a light years ahead better. The potential is huge. He have the possibility to be the best in the world. If it happens, remains to be seen, says Torbjørnsen.
- Similar Bailly on some world stars in the style of play?
- I am a Liverpool fan and Mamadou Sakho is a bit of a similar type, but Bailly is ten times better than Sakho.

That one quote "Bailly is ten times better than Sakho." surely didn't look like anything a Scouse would say. Scout must be the only non-delusional scouse supporter in the world

Eric Bailly has claimed that both Manchester clubs tried to tempt him to the Premier League this summer. The central defender became Jose Mourinho's first signing at Manchester United when he moved from Villareal in a £30m deal. An Ivory Coast international , Bailly received mixed messages from his teammates. Manchester City star Yaya Toure tried to convince the 22-year-old to link up with him at the Etihad while Didier Drogba hammered home the qualities of Mourinho . When it came to deciding, the latter piece of advice proved key in Bailly making his mind up as he weighed up phonecalls from the United manager and a City assistant. “I signed for United because I like Mourinho, as simple as that," he told The Sun . “I wanted to play for someone who works very hard. I didn’t speak to Pep Guardiola but the ‘second’ manager called me and Mourinho called me as well. “He said come and play for me. I prefer Mourinho, in part because of Didier Drogba, who Mourinho worked with. “I have played with Didier in the Ivory Coast, he is a friend and he told me, ‘Jose did this for me, Jose did that for me’. “Yaya also called me and said come to City. But once Jose spoke to me and Didier gave me advice, I knew straight away I wanted to play for him.” www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/eric-bailly-explains-picked-manchester-11685689
