Yep,seen that, and just seen Ray-I fuckin' love everyone-Wilkins on the news, and guess what, he had a "an extremely happy time" at Chelsea when he was there. "Move along, nothing to see here." Horrible rumour floating around this afternoon that Chelsea (allegedly) paid a former youth player off,following a complaint he'd made over a scout-now deceased-called Eddie Heath. FA also cut short-by over three years-an investigation into child safeguarding, I'm NOT a conspiracy nut, but it makes you wonder just how far down the rabbit hole this goes. |

Dean Radford and Jamie Webb, who joined Southampton at the age of 13, as well as a third unnamed player have told BBC South Today about their experiences. Dave Merrington, the club’s former youth team coach and first-team manager, also confirmed to the BBC that he raised concerns about disturbing anecdotes that he was hearing from young players. Radford, who would travel to Southampton from Bristol at weekends, described how he would stay over. “The first night I stayed when another lad did as well,” said Radford, who became a professional. “It was very odd for me because this was the first experience I’d had of closeness. He would be laid on the settee, one player would be laid one side of him, and I would be snuggled up. The settee wasn’t big enough to take the three of us but he got us on there somehow.” Asked what he thought, he said: “This is odd. I don’t know this guy but he is being this affectionate towards me. The reasons he gave was because we needed to trust him, he needed to be like a second father to us. If we trusted him, and it worked both ways, then the chances were there we would become a professional footballer.” Radford said that he would be invited into the bedroom and asked “strange questions” and that, when he once hurt his back, he was sexually assaulted when he went back to his room. “There were other things,” he said. “In the car with him he would be playing soft music, love music and putting his arm on your leg and getting you to lean over, put your head in his lap while he is driving along.” Webb said that his memories of his time at Southampton were “tarnished” by the realisation of the environment that they were coached in. “I recall clearly that he tried to put his hand in between my shorts and the tracksuit that I was wearing and I just blocked him,” he said. “He used to encourage lads to write letters to him and he used to say I want you to write a letter to me about how you feel about me. He would say, ‘It’s all right, all the lads have done it’. I look on it now and it just seems like grooming. A definite attempt to abuse me.” Radford, who is now in his forties, said that his experiences would always live with him. “You deal with it but you still have it there and it is buried there deep and it comes up and it will keep coming up for the rest of my life,” he said. “The club itself I do hold partly responsible for it because they must have known, they must have heard these rumours going around because everyone else had.” Merrington, who did raise his concerns, said: “I had heard rumours about young players being massaged nakedly when we were playing other teams. That disturbed me. When I heard the banter on the minibus, I just felt that there is something in what I have been hearing. They were doing in a joking sort of a way but I didn’t like it. “One of the players I dropped off, the last one, when I questioned him he just emotionally broke down and it disturbed my greatly. There were things obviously going on that we didn’t know about.” The third player, who wanted to remain anonymous, told the BBC: “I was so scared about losing my opportunity to be a football player and, for him to manipulate my trust, my innocence as a young lad, to manipulate my brain, makes me so angry. He stole that part of my life.” Hampshire Police have confirmed that they are investigating non-recent child abuse in the football community and The Daily Telegraph understands that some of these allegations form part of the investigation. Southampton FC have said they will fully cooperate with any police investigation.

The worst of it tends to come really quickly. Hope that's true in this case and as ever I hope we're not involved. Not likely during Ferguson's time. He'd have killed.

Sadly, this won't just be restricted to football...just think of athletics, gymnastics, swimming etc...
This could be a huge can of worms and I hope it gets dealt with sooner rather than later...

Chelsea accused of paying ex-players off to keep quiet. This is so far from over, it's sickening. Heard on the radio today that a payment was made just last year. |

Sadly, this won't just be restricted to football...just think of athletics, gymnastics, swimming etc... This could be a huge can of worms and I hope it gets dealt with sooner rather than later... Just think about life. This isn't a football thing or sport thing, this is everywhere. |

True enough...my wife works in Social Care and I have heard horrendous stories...just highlighting other huge scandals that are likely to break... I just think the opprtuntities for this kind of thing are much bigger in sport although families are a pretty bad area for this too... |

A few of the people who have come forward have mentioned the fact that they knew if they said anything, that they thought their shot at the big time would be over, and these are kids that thought they had only one shot at making it in life.
