the expectation of a city is rarely how you want or hope it to be, if you stay for a few days or a week and mostly see the city center / tourist areas. its personal naivity that doesnt allow people to actually learn and see the true culture behind a place.
some comments in here remind me of an older german couple i met when living and working in barcelona. i was working on rikshaw`s, the bike taxi. had this couple as customers once and asked them how they liked barcelona so far. they told me that they arrived by a cruiser at the port and they had 3 hours to experience barcelona before leaving again. they said, they didnt like it and expected something different thats why they already go back to the ship after 2 hours in the city. i kicked them out of the bike and told them how extremely stupid they are and they should find the way on their own back to their cruiser. most people dont even know how to discover a city, they follow the major tourist paths and are dissapointed, instead of having the courage to go away from these areas and discover the really interesting things.

I loved Paris. It was one of the best trips I ever had. Shithole is Naples. God damn that place was horrible. I’ve passed through it on a couple of holidays to Sorrento. Paris is one of my favourite cities next to New York. Been twice , once as a kid and the other was my first holiday as an adult. Went with an ex boyfriend. I do not like New York. Like at all. Went once, had enough , lol.

I’m a bit of a culture freak but my family aren’t. I went to see the Mona Lisa years ago with my then boyfriend and we loved it and had a good look round the Louvre. I can imagine my lot spending a hefty entrance fee, finding it and then wanting to leave 20 minutes after. My mum used to drag me round art galleries and take me to concerts when I was little and saved up to take me around Europe on holiday. My husband isn’t too bad but my kids are pretty terrible.

It's supposed to be the capital of the world, a hub of diversity and culture, but it's a facade. It feels completely soulless once you scratch the surface.

Would be amazing just to see something of that size though.

I've never been to Paris but I've nothing good from anyone who has been.
Also don't get the obsession with New York, I'd far rather travel the deep south of the States rather than any of the big cities, get me down to Louisiana with a big pot of gumbo, that'll do me.
Each to their own of course, it'd be a small world if we all liked/wanted the same things. Sydney is very divisive in Australia; some love it, some hate it. I love parts of it and hate others. The Rocks is excellent, love spending days around there. The harbour is beautiful and the views outstanding. But the suburbs are shit, the people can be money obsessed jerks, and it just doesn't have an Australian feel to it, if that makes sense. Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth; you know you're in an Australian city there. Sydney? You could be in Hong Kong to be honest.
