Think it may be between him and Modric as things stand. Both were excellent in the groups, struggled in the second round, and then Lukaku was excellent again in the QFs - maybe Modric will be the same tonight. Kane could still win it if he drags England to the final, even though his goals have all been sheer luck or incredibly straightforward to score. Edit: forgot Mbappe, he's definitely in with a shout too. Not been as good in as many games as some of the others, but his destruction of Argentina felt like a genuinely luminary moment. Mbappe was incredible in that one game but has blown hot and cold. Modric is a good shout. I’d go (not in order) Rom Hazard Tripper Kane Modric Ratikic Mbappe Pogba If say KDB has a blinder or Griezmann in the semis then they’d have to come into the reckoning too. Agree on Mbappe, but I just think that moment will stand out in people's minds if France get to the final. Lukaku and Modric have been better overall, but Mbappe just has that incredible game on his side. It's unfair on more established players, but I think that's just the way people think. People love making a new star. It's like Michael Owen in 98, but if England had then got to the semis or final. Mbappe will surely have a better career than Owen, but at the time he was so hyped - it's the only similar 'burst onto the scene at the World Cup' individual game that I can think of in recent times. Mostly agree with your list. I doubt anyone else joins it at this stage - most WC semis and final games tend to be very cagey wars of attrition as teams become reluctant to take risks when so close to the prize (7-1 obviously a mental exception). Rare a true individual performance makes the difference at that point I think.

sportwitness.co.uk/newspaper-makes-plea-man-united-star-43-reasons-not-say-goodbye-pick-best/Once again stating that he would retire from the Belgium national team after the 2020 Euros, Romelu Lukaku is causing quite a stir in his home country. The Manchester United striker’s comments have led the likes of Kevin Mirallas and Vincent Kompany to come out and say they didn’t believe their national teammate one bit, and expected him to still be around for the 2022 World Cup. Not only that, but the local press, who know how valuable the Belgian is to Roberto Martinez’s plans and any success their country might have in Qatar, are starting to plead him to stay. DH journalist Yves Taildeman went as far as presenting Lukaku with 43 reasons – one for every goal the forward has scored for Belgium – why making a U turn on his retirement decision is what’s best for him and his country. Here are some of the best ones: 1. You always aim higher, meaning you’ll have to try once more to win it 6. Another objective in your career, winning the Ballon d’Or. Without a World Cup, it would be quite difficult. 9. Your presence at a World Cup has to have an incredible impact on your marketing value. Jay-Z’s company who manage your assets couldn’t ask for more than seeing you in Qatar and America. 12. For multiculturalism: Born in Antwerp to Congolese parents, adopted by Brussels and perfectly trilingual, you represent your country across the world. 19. You dedicate each goal to your mum. Of course your parents are thrilled when you score for United, but their excitement and pride are even greater when it’s for Belgium. 23. You aren’t going to stay at Manchester United your whole life. Real Madrid tempts you? Stats prove it. A good World Cup helps to pull off big transfers. 27. You have friends among the biggest celebrities in the world. The rapper Jay-Z, but also DJ Khaled, a hip-hop star, are your friends. They are proud to have a player shining at the World Cup. 29. You still think a chunk of the Belgian press aren’t fans of you. You’re wrong. You’ve even convinced your detractors. 33. In eight years, you’ve had a few injuries, but you’ve never been out for months. You are made out of reinforced concrete. 39. You want to focus entirely on Manchester United, but when you come back from international duty after a win, you must feel like you’re walking on air. It’s sometimes good to leave your club, especially when things aren’t working out. 43. The most important reason has nothing to do with Manchester United, with money, fatigue or lack of respect. You are proud to be Belgian, and you therefore don’t abandon your colours. Nothing like a good old guilt trip, right?

It's become clear that this fella is just not good enough to lead the line for us long term. I thought it before we signed him and thought it early last season. He got himself a bit of a reprieve towards the end of last season but the start of this season has just shown once again that he isn't elite level.
He's an upgrade on Rooney (the Rooney of his last few seasons anyway). Other than that he's one of the worst starting centre forwards I've seen for us. Think of Cantona, Ruud, Ronaldo, Van Persie, Rooney (before he became a cunt), the quartet from 99, Berba. Even the likes of Zlatan and Tevez. At best he should be squad player standard.
Fucking depressing to know we blew £75mil on him.

He`s lazy in that he won't move to a cross sometimes unless its pin point, he stands about too much.

I think he hit a dry spell towards the end of March or something like that, but up to that point whenever he was even near a goal scoring opportunity I just knew he was going to bang it in. Lukaku is just not at that level (or will ever get there). The biggest thing with Lukaku for me is that as a fan simply I don't trust him to score, which makes me wonder what other players in the squad (you know, the 1 or 2 who actually give a rats ass) feel when they pass the ball to him.

At least now you can say maybe he would get in one of the other top six seven teams, though Deeney might have a case at keeping him out.

Whether it's significant that those are the two 'top 6' teams that didn't get CL last year is a different question...

The way Chelsea line up and play I don't think he would start tbh, I wouldn't swap auba for Lukaku if I was at arsenal either, unless you play balls on to his head in the 6 yard box all game
