Auba and Lukaku could play together IMO - one on the wing.

Jose Mourinho was careful not to be critical of Romelu Lukaku after the Manchester United striker extended his barren run to eight club games with another impotent performance against Juventus. But the manager is right to be concerned.

“I have to agree his moment is not sweet,” said Mourinho. “Not just with the goals that he is not scoring but also in his confidence, in his movement, in his touch, he is not linking the game well with the team.”

In summary, Lukaku is struggling to perform any of the basic functions of a centre-forward. Dry spells are an occupational hazard for a striker but in the absence of goals, a No.9 has to diversify. Right now Lukaku is failing to compensate in any way.

In the eight games since the 2-1 win at Watford on September 15, the United forward has neither scored nor created a goal for anyone else. And Lukaku can hardly put it down to poor finishing, on his behalf or that of his team-mates. The 25-year-old has managed just four shots in four Premier League games, none of which have been on target. Harry Kane has attempted four times that number and Sergio Aguero even more, but it’s not just the elite level strikers that have been a greater threat to the opposition goal – 95 players have attempted more shots than Lukaku since his last goal.

In terms of chances created in open play, Lukaku is operating at the same level creatively as Cardiff centre-back Sean Morrison. There is no doubt that, right now, United are carrying their £75million striker.

This is not normal for Lukaku. After a flying start to his Old Trafford career at the start of last season, he embarked on a seven-match dry spell, but at least he was still offering assists. Never did he go more than two full games without being directly involved in a goal. It will be nine matches if his form continues against his former club Everton on Sunday.

Lukaku acknowledged his struggles in front of the media on Monday. “Here I still think my teamwork between myself and my team-mates can improve and be much better. It’s something that we’re working,” he said.

“The players need to know me and know my movement. When that starts clicking I think the results I have with Belgium will also come here.”

It would be easier to agree with the sentiment if it was spoken a year ago. But Lukaku is 64 games into his United career and aside from Alexis Sanchez, who arrived in January, his team-mates have remained the same. In the words of another red who unfathomably rarely encountered a dry patch: ‘If you don’t know me by now…’

To the naked eye, it seems that Lukaku has taken his frustration out on the weights. Two years ago, he said: “I really want to keep my pace, especially – I’ve seen a lot of guys who used to be faster than me who’ve bulked up so much they’re now slower, and I don’t want to be one of those guys.”

Mourinho was reportedly concerned at New Year that his second-biggest signing had lost some pace because he had bulked up even since joining United. He was still clocked as the Red Devils’ fastest player last season after reaching 34.84km per hour during a lung-bursting sprint in the dying stages against Chelsea in February and few would want to take the Belgian on over 30 metres. But his current performances suggests some dynamism has been lost around the box. In terms of physical presence, right now, watching Lukaku is similar to watching Shaquille O’Neal in the NBA. And Shaq struggled with shooting too.

Mourinho seems to believe that the answer lies in playing Lukaku into form. “Romelu is a hard-working guy and a good professional,” he said last night. “One day the goals will arrive and the confidence will be back.”

An alternative take: Lukaku is knackered and he needs a breather. The Belgium striker has played a part in all but five games in all competitions since moving to United and the summer offered little respite, with Roberto Martinez using Lukaku in nine out of 10 matches at the World Cup and in the build-up to the finals.

Mourinho has options to give Lukaku, one of his most-trusted lieutenants, a rest. Sanchez has looked lost out wide and would relish a run through the middle, as would Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial. The manager may be loathe to trust them in a central role but, whatever their failings, it is hard to imagine them offering as little as Lukaku.

Just to emphasise this stat: 5 players have attempted more shots than Lukaku since his last goal.

All joking aside, Lukaku is more infuriating than Fellaini. I honestly do not know where the Lukaku that scored 3 in the 5-5 game against West Brom has gone. Where is LAST SEASONS Lukaku?

Remember when we got Falcao and he kept falling over every 5.2 seconds? this is worse.

He seems like a decent, honest, hard-working, humble chap.

1. he has bulked up to silly levels, clearly doesn't need that mass and needs to scale down.
2. he needs to be rest for at least 2 weeks, do not play him and make it clear to him it's not him being dropped, media can say what they want in that period. We have other options to play that position so we will get on with it.
3. lead foot aside he isn't rubbish and after what he has done over the last few seasons we all know we weren't getting a world class player but a Darren bent type in that he will score goals but lacks that finesse needed to be in the higher echelons of world class strikers.

On the one hand, we all know that Lukaku just isn't good enough of a striker to win us the league, but on the other hand, I feel bad for him that people take the time to make videos like just to mock him. He's not at the level we aspire to, but he's one of the very few players we have who always give 100%... that counts for something with the current lot.

I agree with you Carbs.

He's gone absolutely to shit this season. When that stat came up the other night that Lukaku hasn't scored at Old Trafford since March, that summed him up.

Agree with what people are saying on here, there looks like there's a real issue with his weight because he seems to be labouring around the pitch.

Also with his bad first touch, is that going to improve anytime soon? No, is the answer because that's ingrained in him, he can't help it.

stop being soft.

if he cant handle the stick he shouldn't play for a massive club

he needs to lose a lot of muscle. he looks so unbalanced and top heavy. that's down to him wantin to be a tank instead of a footballer. go play basketball or NFL or rugby if you want to a monster.
