Hi All,
I am trying to raise awareness and raise funds for a condition that you will most likely not have heard of called Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS).
CRPS is the highest form of chronic pain in medical science. On the McGill Pain Index it ranks higher than losing a digit, child birth and non-terminal cancer.
2 years ago my Dad (James Tagimuri) went in hospital for a simple procedure on his knee to tidy up his cartilage. This should have been a day case but unfortunately he spent 12 weeks in hospital and 7 visits to theatre, ending up in high dependency to which he nearly died. Those of you who know the family will know the pain and heartache in which we went through. I watched him scream in horrific pain every day, the pain was so bad you couldn’t touch the hair on his leg, the bed sheet was unbearable for him, temperature changes were unbearable for him and even a slight draft was too unbearable. He was given huge amounts of pain relief but nothing seemed to help. He spent time in a wheelchair, time on crutches, but did eventually manage to weight bare, through the inner strength in which he holds, that some others suffering might not be able to possess.
Although coming out of hospital, it is by no means over. He is still in huge amounts of pain on a daily basis, often house bounding him and crippling him for days at a time. For someone who was so active and passionate about extreme sport he struggles to walk now. Before this he used to compete at high standards in Downhill Mountain biking, Enduro motocross and skateboard. To say the least, he could withstand pain.
Only recently did he plead with the surgeon to amputate his leg. He is still under the care of the pain team and under the care of an Orthopaedic surgeon.
Complex regional pain syndrome is a poorly understood condition, very little is known or understood about it, there is no cure and no specific treatment. It is believed to be a rare neurological disorder which causes chronic pain that cannot be controlled. A person experiences persistent, severe and debilitating pain. It is believed to be the result of dysfunction in the nervous systems, where the signals between the affected limb or body part and the brain are misinterpreted.
CRPS can happen to anyone or us, at any time. Most cases of CRPS are triggered by an injury but the resulting pain is much more severe and long-lasting than normal. The pain is usually confined to one limb, but it can sometimes spread to other parts of the body.
Some cases of CRPS gradually improve to some degree over time, however other cases of CRPS never go away, and the affected person will experience pain for many years.
I am trying to raise money for researchers to hopefully find a cure, or at least a better understanding of this horrible disease. I hope to help fund research to bring an end to the suffering that many people are going through; feeling helpless. If you would like to donate or sponsor me and the team it would be highly appreciated.
We will be competing in the Born Survivor Lake District challenge. 10km. 30 obstacles. mud, freezing cold water and heights.
if anyone would like to contribute to the funds, no matter how big or small it would be highly appreciated. .
