www.football365.com/news/gossip-man-united-to-sell-three-first-team-playersMOURINHO WANTS TO SELL JONES AND SMALLINGNow we might not agree with everything that Jose Mourinho has done during his time as Manchester United manager, but you really can’t fault this. We’re told by the Daily Mirror that Mourinho plans to revamp his central defence this summer by getting rid of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones. It’s a story that surely comes off the back of Manchester United’s latest defeat, but you can see why they might want to upgrade those particular options. Jones and Smalling have played far too often, while Victor Lindelof has been a total disaster and Eric Bailly cannot keep fit. So that’s two central defenders, a right-back, a central midfielder and a right-sided attacking midfielder needed this summer. And then United can challenge for the title? Rejoice!

Who do we get in though?
I genuinely have no clue as to who's a good defender these days.

Rumblings of Alderweireld being available in the summer. Something about him having a £25mil release clause if Spurs exercise the 1 year extension clause in his contract.

Aldereiweld would be one. Stick him with Bailly, and go with Rojo, TFM and Tuanzebe as back-ups?

Who do we get in though? I genuinely have no clue as to who's a good defender these days. I believe in Jonathan Tah. Not sure how he isn't at Bayern already, although they did sign Sule. Skriniar at Inter has been impressive for both Sampdoria last season and Inter this. Only 23, went for about 25 million euros last summer. Alderwiereld is of course an option if we could pry him away from Levy. Would prefer to park a tanker of cash at New White Hart Lane for Kane though. Depends what you want really. Experience, youth, both, everything? Same sort of names are in the mix as always. I read somewhere PSG might be going all in on Marquinhos by giving him the captaincy from Thiago Silva. So one is too old and the other is probably not going anywhere. Manolas at Roma, Koulibaly at Napoli. Don't think Varane or Umtiti would be gettable. Godin is still only 31. Romagnoli and Rugani are still the Italian hopes. Kimpembe has played a lot for PSG this season. Bonucci is still only 30. Seen rumblings about him not being happy at Milan.

There are a few CB's of the required quality who are probably gettable. Umtitti if he doesn't sign a new contract (which he almost certainly will), Aldereiweld, de Ligt, Koulibaly, Manolas.

Also, as long as Smalling is gone I don't really care who we bring in. It'll be an improvement.

Alderwiereld apparently has a timed release clause below £30m for this summer which is probably less than half of his market value at the moment. If we're not in for him it would be stupidity of the highest order (and MEN are saying we are in for him).
I imagine it would come down to who pays more out of us and PSG (would have suggested City but as they've spent so much on Laporte and Stones, and still have Kompany, I doubt they'd be willing to make another CB one of their highest-paid players). Hopefully us, but if PSG are jettisoning one or two CBs and tell him he'll start I could see him going there for the guaranteed trophies and better short-term CL prospects.

Alderweireld would be perfect, an experienced leader type is what we lack more than anything at the back in my opinion. We've still got the best defensive record in the league but when it goes wrong it goes embarrassingly wrong and there's nobody there to organise them and try to fix it.
I'd bin off Smalling and Rojo, not Smalling and Jones. Jones has the occasional brainfart but he's still an excellent defender for me. Much better than the other 2 at least. Keep Tuanzebe and give him more game time as well next season.
A selection of cb's consisting of Alderweireld (or anyone else we bring in), Bailly, Jones, Lindelof and Tuanzabe is more than good enough for me.

Aldereiweld would be one. Stick him with Bailly, and go with Rojo, TFM and Tuanzebe as back-ups? I'd rather keep Jones than Rojo personally. Also I assume Lindelof would still be at the club? Other than that I think that's spot on. TFM could easily get gametime in any of CB, RB and CDM so he should be ok despite not having a clear path into the team at first glance. Whilst we definitely need a new RB, if we prioritised other areas and asked for one more year out of Tony V with TFM as backup I could get on board with that (depending on what is done elsewhere). I'd like to see a squad along the lines of: GK: DDG, Johnstone, Periera (Romero out) Defence: New CB (Alderwiereld?), Tuanzabe, Bailly, Lindelof, Jones, Shaw, Young/Blind, Valencia, TFM (Darmian, Rojo, Smalling, one of Blind/Young out) Midfield: New CM (Savic?), Matic, Pogba, Herrera, McTominay, TFM again (Fellaini out, Carrick retired) Attack: New ST (but only if a worldie like Dybala becomes available) Lukaku, Rashford, Martial, Sanchez, Lingard, Mata (Zlatan out) That's 4 or 5 sales, plus Carrick retiring and Zlatan & Romero presumably leaving on frees, with 2/3 incomings and 2 youngsters being promoted (plus McTominay probably getting more gametime). So we'd lose a couple of bodies, but considering I think Zlatan, Carrick, Romero and Blind probably only have a few hundred PL minutes between them this season (mostly coming from Blind), it's more getting the squad back to its natural level. The squad probably still wouldn't be as good as that of City/PSG/Real/Barca/Bayern, but the core XI would be strong. That's also a fairly conservative summer anyway IMO considering the issues we face - we could easily also trade up players like Jones and Herrera if we wanted to shake things up more (though I get the sense Jose doesn't like doing that).

Alderwiereld is still the best CB in the PL and to be honest I don't really think anyone comes that close (though Vertonghen has threatened to be near at times, and Stones had a few excellent months before reverting to type post-injury).

smalling rojo darmian blind young fellaini no were near good enough and all need to leave, romero johnstone zlat will leave more then likely carrick retireing, thats 10 players who need to be replaced 1 way or another and thats before improving on the players we already have.
We neee a better squad then what we currently have 4 transfer windows in millions spent and our squad is actualy pretty shit. I dont even want to think about madrid going all out for ddg again this summer aswell
