Rash needs a big breakthrough season if he harbours hope of catching Rooney.
Not saying he won't or isn't capable or anything like that, just that when Rooney was his age he hit his scoring purple patch, notching 20+ in 4 of 6 seasons, and 30+ in 2 of those 4.
Rash needs the same, hopefully this year could be it. When Kane was 21 he'd scored 5 goals for Spurs, with a further 16 for Leyton Orient, Leicester, and Millwall, and was yet to play for England. Look at him now, Rash can do the same.
On the game itself, great win, Newcastle were their usual shitty selves, looking to kick the players off the pitch. Stood up to that, scored twice, kept a clean sheet, moved closer to top 4; lovely stuff.

Lindelof. Brilliant tonight. I can't remember who it was, either Souness, Redknapp, or Keown, but one of them said that he isn't Premier League quality earlier this season...

Hopefully management realizes glassman Jones and Tony really are below United standards. Jury still out on Sanchez but I just don't see him as the same player he once was. Will be interested to see this "new" team play against better foes.

I would keep Jones and ship Rojo and Smalling first.

Haven’t seen the game as I was away overnight on a site with no reception and am looking forward to sitting down and enjoying the recording when I can.
Ole! Ole! Ole!

I'm pretty disappointed that the media has focused purely on OGS for the recent upturn in results, whilst blatantly ignoring the impact Tatty has had with the starting of the match day threads.
Surely the man deserves a shout out for his effort in saving the season too.

In terms of satisfaction, under the circumstances, I put that win up there with the one when they battered us for 90 minutes and lost to a single goal by Eric.

Definitely in contention for a permanent role ahead of next season

Hard fought victory on a bogey fixture which had more than the usual levels levels of cuntery and ref ineptitude ?
I'm liking this timeline.

Herrera MOTM. Pretty great result considering we played without a right side. Don't know why Ole didn't leave Martial on and play Alexis as RW. Valencia's time is up. Would have been nice to see if Fred can take over from Matic, who despite looking slower is still the linchpin. Lindelof great in defense, but did Atsu's attacks all come through his side? Atsu had entirely too much freedom and got in easily three or four times. Ole has 4 wins out of 4, they said it's the first time since Busby. Herrera was epic in the last four games. It was madness of Mourinho to left him out after Herrera was player of the year. But it's behind us now.
I'd like to see if the current staff can galvanize life into Valencia again or he is really gone. It's still early days and the staff had little time to work on the players. He seems to be almost in the same situation as Sanchez except their position is different. Playing the whole right side alone is physically much more demanding. So Alexis might get away with it if he plays smart and Valencia might not.
Fred is the same kind of player as Herrera so I would use him to give Herrera some rest when he needs it. We have a nicely balanced midfield with Pogba, Herrera and Matic, and Matic desperately needs some rest. Our biggest problem is we don't have any other defensive midfielders. So if we want to keep the formation we have to shoehorn someone in his place or we have to change the team's formation. I have two concerns about Fred. On one hand he still didn't took up the pace of the Premier League. On the other hand he likes to go forward and I don't know if he is disciplined enough to stay back when he has to. If both Fred and Herrera would go forward at the same time it could left our defense exposed.
About the game. The biggest achievement of it was that none of our players got injured. Newcastle played a dirty game and the referee assisted for them. I was happy too see some of our players payed back some of it. We had to work much harder in this game for the victory than in the previous games and we made some mistakes but we got away with them. We can learn a lot of this match that's for sure. I'm pleased with our performance.

6 points and 11 GD behind Chelsea in 4th now. 10 points and 14 GD behind 2nd placed Spurs. What are we behind first?? Given it's the scouse, and the gap is still monstrous, I chose not to include it.

Pogba had a patchy game by his standards but you have to praise his temperament with the kickings he got, same for Rasher actually.

This game shows order has been restored as much as the last 3 big wins. Might be 0-0 but we've got them more or less stuck in their own half apart from the odd counter and they've had to resort to kicking us to pieces. Plenty of 1-0s won under Fergie in these circumstances. Nice to see a new poster who isn't a complete moron AND who knows their stuff. Thank fuck. Keep it up. Brendan Rodgers
