Paul Ince:
For me, it's not just Harry Maguire, it's the midfield. He gets absolutely no protection. If I am playing in midfield with Roy Keane, Harry Maguire does not get isolated like he does at Man United.
'The last thing you want is to have someone like [Armando] Broja who is strong and quick against Harry Maguire, you've got to make sure you've got midfield players around Maguire to protect him and help him out.
'The amount of times where Steve Bruce wasn't the quickest but I'd come across or Keane or Gary Pallister, because we knew.
'For so many teams it is so easy to get through United, and that's why we are seeing Maguire getting punished so much because he has no protection whatsoever.' ======
Ah that's OK then Incey. The most expensive defender on the planet but bless his cotton socks, he needs protection. I've changed my perception of him completely now, everytime I see him fall on his arse because he had to actually try and tackle someone, it's not his fault, it's the midfielders. Any time he completely fails to pack up his man at a set piece, it's not his fault, it's the midfield. Any time he tries to pass the ball and knocks it straight out for a throw in, or 10 yards to the foot of an opposition player, it's not his fault, it's the midfields.

Reading between the lines Ralf is politely saying he needs to get his finger out but for 80 million he shouldn’t have any issues with different formations. At the end of the day you can’t polish a turd and Maguire is and always will be a lower half PL or championship player at best.

Ralf will have much more sympathy from fans if he had demanded players in January transfer window, dropped Maguire and appoint Bruno as the captain.

Ralf will have much more sympathy from fans if he had demanded players in January transfer window, dropped Maguire and appoint Bruno as the captain. All I can say is: 1. He demanded players, he made it clear. 2. We all know he wants to drop Maguire, the options simply are injured or flaky. Personally I’d drop him anyway but…. 3. To come in and appoint his own captain for 6 months was never going to happen. I have my frustrations with Rangnick, same as you and everyone else but unless he is told he has this gig for longer, he is simply trying to balance far too many things in a short space of time.

If the choice is between Maguire and a Golden Retriever, the dog gets on the pitch.

Eddie Howe walked into Newcastle, publicly said they needed signings - got them, and changed captain almost first thing he did. If he wants to drop Maguire, then drop him. Not making shit excuses for him and shoring up his position as captain.

The circumstances were different. I'll be honest Rangnick is not going to say too much that will jeopardise his £8 million, I don't think any of us would. In regards to Maguire like I said, I'd drop him but, probably not stripe him of the captaincy but I'd drop him

Ralf has said we have enough senior players and offloaded five. While keeping Lingard to play from the bench, apparently. It was sink or swim for us in terms of European Cup qualification. The ambition might be different but the need was the same. I actually think it is much easier to remove the captaincy than it is to simply drop Maguire. Give it some Sam Warburton rubbish about wanting to focus on getting his form back and concentrate on defending. Maybe throw in a press conference/interview so Maguire can make it look like his decision. We have senior players who could take the armband and nobody would question it. Dropping him entirely does require a replacement. No idea about Jones' durability but until he breaks surely he's worth a run.

Dropping him entirely does require a replacement. No idea about Jones' durability but until he breaks surely he's worth a run. I'll be honest, I think Ralf Rangnick underestimated the size of the job. Personally I thought a good coach would be enough to see us through, there is clearly plenty going on and reality is poch or ten haag are gonna face teh same issues unless something drastic happens in the summer in terms of player turnover. He wanted a smaller squad for the sake of harmony and also from a human perspective to get people playing. Lingard would have been off if not for Greenwood. Time will tell on Donny but if the first game was anything to go by, i question why he did not get more gametime. Dropping Maguire is easier than a captaincy stripping simply because his form has been poor. Drop him, someone comes in and plays very well and reality is you have a new captain via the backdoor and if Ralf stays he continues in that vein, if he leaves then he has given the new manager a platform to formally appoint a new captain (Bruno being my pick). The team had one clear need in January, this differs from what Jose and LVG needed. Maguire is costing us goals but he is one of a few problems in this team, I don't know if Ralf wants a situation where he can say, I backed him publicly, gave his opportunities but he is just simply poor and therefore he doesn't have people on his back. Maybe he has been waiting on Bailly to comeback? I really don't know what his thinking is. I don't agree with the comments and I think he has to be careful with his comments. Last thing we want is someone that just appears daft, he is an intelligent man and an honest one so he needs to continue in that vein.
