There really isn't a good defender in Maguire. We have seen Lindelof be a good defender though. Vidic was not quick or particularly gifted on the ball but he he was utterly dominate in the air and could man handle strikers. He owned his area and made few mistakes. Ferdinand made up for his limitations in other areas and vice versa but Maguire really doesnt have any of those qualities. Maguire is really quite average and at 27 a long shot if hes ever to be a quality centre half. I think both centre halves need to compliment eachouter but one cannot carry the other. We got mugged by Leicester, to pay 80m for him was one of the worst bits of business I can remember. You pay that money for a Ferdinand or a Van Dijk. There Rolls Royces in comparison. Had he cost 20 or 30m it might not sting quite as much leaving him on the bench. Is Vidic and Rio possibly the best centerback pairing in Premier League History? I certainly think so.

Pipped by Carragher and Agger! Although Rio features 3 times. talksport.com/football/494382/premier-league-defensive-partnerships-liverpool/

The only one that comes close is Bruce and Pallister! But I really think Rio/Vida is pretty much the archetype of the perfect CB pairing, they complimented eachother so well.

For me they were the best, Agger never won anything of serious note at Liverpool that would justify such praise. Why is he even in the conversation?

Proof once again, as if it were needed, that projected/expected goals is laughably meaningless.

ha ha, what a load of crap. Agger and spit the dog.... Give any neutral fan the choice of those centre back pairings and i very much doubt that duo would come out on top!

I thought the Arsenal or Chelsea teams would be closest to us in the defense department.

Vidic and Rio never really had that, yeah Carrick was excellent at what he did but he wasn't a pure holder to break up play, he was a deeper playmaker. Bruce & Pallister were top drawer. Adams & Keown were good, mainly due to Adams in fairness. Rio & Woodgate could have been amazing had Woodgate been able to stay fit for more than 3 games at a time and Leeds didn't end up completely skint.

Rio - Vidic the best I have seen , but terry - carvalho were pretty good too, that first chelsea team of Jose was a class apart I never rated Terry. It's been talked about before on here. He was a solid defender but also slow on the turn and frequently bailed out by having quick partners. Worse, he was more worried about looking like a hero defender instead of just doing his job.

Carvalho on the other hand was a monster CB. Would have loved him at Utd. Did everything well and was a sneaky fucker as well. Great player.
