There has to be a player of similar quality to Kante out there.

It’s worth remembering that some people didn’t think Kante was ‘Utd quality’ despite his incredible performances for the Foxes. Sometimes you just need to pull the trigger and take a chance.

The only logical explanation for the lack of DM recruitment has to be that someone in the ‘coaching ‘ staff believes that one of our existing players can be converted...
Maybe Scott?
Caveat: I do understand that logic doesn’t always play a part in our ‘planning ‘...

Be the same people that think we are winning leagues etc with McFred.

I don't fully understand the animosity towards McTominay and Fred, they were pretty great together at times last season - the issue, to me, is they can't reach the heights we need all the time, i.e. we need more high quality depth in CM.

Agree. It's not their fault they're being made to play week in week out and no reinforcements have been brought in. It is supremely irritating to watch them flounder about in midfield to be honest. The blame lies solely at the feet of the manager and board.

I don't really have anything negative to say about McTominay tbh. He's an excellent Fletcher/Park type utility player who always puts a shift in and has progressed well under Ole. However he shouldn't be an automatic starter in a United side trying to win trophies, unless he comes back from injury and somehow grows into a modern Carrick and we end up scoring so many goals that it doesn't matter that we don't have a midfield destroyer. I thought Fred was growing into the player we were hoping he'd be a little while back but I just think he's not good enough. Can't pass the ball and looks really shaky when put under pressure in midfield. As you say, we need better quality. And if we have that, then we don't need to have 2 players doing 1 quality player's job.

Fred isn't good enough.
McT for me, the jury is still out.
DVB would be a better option than Fred,he would get us on the front foot far quicker.

We don't need to identify the next Kante. No football club has world class players in every position. All we need is a major upgrade on Fred.
There are lots of promising players in the French League which is usually a great hunting ground for defensive midfielders. Tchouameni and Bruno Guimaraes come to mind as stand outs. Sadly we missed out on Sangare and Soumare who moved to PSV and Leicester respectively. But Sangare certainly would be attainable as PSV are a selling club so worth seeing how he does over there.
But historically we seem to prefer to go for more established players letting clubs like Leicester swoop in or wait until the other big clubs express an interest and watch as they join PSG or Real Madrid.
I cannot see that changing. So Bissouma does seem to be the obvious choice as he's already proven at Brighton he can make the step up to the Premier League. His contract expires in summer of 2023 so in January or next summer you'd imagine Brighton would have to listen to reasonable offers. Of course Liverpool and Manchester City will probably both be interested as well as Liverpool need to replace Wijnaldum and Fernandinho is getting on a bit. But I'd hope we'd at least be in the mix.
Brozovic is another player I like a lot. His contract expires next summer and Inter are such a mess I cannot see him extending. He's a deep lying playmaker that reads the game well and has great distribution and is used to anchoring a three man midfield.
And of course there is Neves. I'm not a massive fan. But he'd still be a major upgrade on Fred and probably available at a reasonable price.
But of course we will focus all our efforts on signing Declan Rice and when West Ham demand Grealish money walk away and stick with McFred.

On another subject, fucking shame we could not have got Trippier, his service from the right for CR7 would have been a huge +
