Manchester United have learnt from lunacy of Marcos Rojo’s £27m contract extension

Pride in Battle. Those were the last three words that Marcos Rojo read before he stepped on to the pitch to take part in his first Manchester derby. The words hung from a sign above the tunnel at the Etihad Stadium, where Rojo would get his first taste of the rivalry between United and City on November 2, 2014.

He took the message to heart. As soon as the match began, United’s £16 million signing slipped into fight mode, thundering into tackles with gusto. In many ways, it was a typical Rojo performance — high on passion, low on control.

Rojo’s seventh United appearance started off relatively well. The then 24-year-old played with authority alongside Chris Smalling, who looked indecisive and would later be sent off. Then came the fireworks. In first-half injury time, Rojo booted Yaya Touré in the United penalty area during a rash attempt to dispossess the City midfielder. Somehow Michael Oliver, the referee, did not blow for a penalty.

Another rush of blood to the head came from Rojo at the start of the second half. He had plenty of cover behind him, but he slid in on Martín Demichelis 35 yards from United’s goal and out popped his left shoulder. Rojo lay on the floor in agony. The dislocation was so gruesome that Sky Sports chose not to show replays of the incident during their live broadcast.

It would be first in a long line of injuries that the Argentina defender would suffer during his United career, which finally came to an end ten days ago when he joined Boca Juniors on a two-year contract. United said that Rojo had moved to the Argentine club for an “undisclosed fee”. Local media in Argentina reported that it was a free transfer, with United having effectively cancelled the final four months of the player’s contract.

Rojo missed 110 matches through injury during his six year spell at United, six months of which he spent on loan at Estudiantes. He dislocated his shoulder again in training at Carrington and suffered from leg, groin and thigh problems during his first two years at Old Trafford. Towards the end of the 2016-17 campaign, probably his best at United, he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament.

Rojo returned to training in November 2017 and, after only ten more appearances, he was awarded a new deal that would run until June 30, 2021. The club even had an option of extending the contract by a further year if they so wished. According to those with knowledge of the situation, if all bonuses and clauses were met, the deal was worth up to £160,000 per week. United had just committed themselves to a deal that could cost them almost £27 million, even if the additional year was not taken. To hand such a lucrative contract to an inconsistent and injury-prone defender was sheer lunacy.

It would be wrong to suggest that Rojo’s time at Old Trafford was a complete failure. He was a valued member of the team that lifted the Europa League and Carabao Cup under José Mourinho, who loved the combative defender. In December 2017, Rojo was one of the first players to rush down the tunnel to come to Mourinho’s aid when he started an argument with the City players after they celebrated their derby win at Old Trafford by blaring music out from the away dressing room.

He came close on a few occasions, but Rojo was not sent off once in his 122 appearances for the club. But did passion alone justify United’s decision to give him a new contract? The evidence suggests otherwise. Rojo went on to start only 12 more matches after signing his new contract. He was beset by injury problems, but should United not have seen that coming, given his previous fitness troubles?

United would argue that in giving Rojo a new deal three years ago, they were backing Mourinho, who clearly wanted him at the club, and that they were protecting the asset. Rojo’s previous contract was due to expire in June 2019, so by tying him down to a new deal, United could, in theory at least, receive a fee for the player if they sold him that summer.

The problem was that United were never going to find a club willing to pay a lot of money for a player with a poor injury history and such a high salary, so they were saddled with him for three years. They would have saved themselves a lot of money if they had managed to sell him in the summer of 2018 — even if it was only for a small fee.

United made a questionable decision regarding another one of their defenders, Phil Jones. In February 2019, they handed Jones, a talented yet injury-prone defender, a new four-year contract — with the theory, presumably, being that if they ever sold him, United would get a transfer fee for the centre back. The 28-year-old has not played for over a year because of injury.

There are signs that United are becoming wiser and more shrewd when it comes to deciding which players deserve new deals, however. Six players were due to be out of contract this summer: Rojo, Sergio Romero, Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata. Of those six, only Pogba and Lingard have had their deals extended, with the club exercising a 12-month option in their respective contracts.

United could have triggered similar extensions in the deals of Rojo and Romero, but quite sensibly have decided against doing so. Rojo has left for Boca and Romero, the 33-year-old goalkeeper, will be allowed to leave on a free in the summer. United are yet to decide whether to trigger the same clauses in the contracts of Mata, 32, and the 33-year-old striker Cavani.

Pogba, the 27-year-old midfielder, is obviously a prized asset worth keeping and there is logic to the idea that West Ham United — or another top-flight club — could pay United a fee for Lingard, who is 28.

During his unveiling at La Bombonera ten days ago, Rojo promised Boca Juniors fans that he would “defend these colours, and I will do so until death”. It was a typically passionate message from the centre back, but Boca supporters will have to wait a while to see their new signing in action. Rojo was due to make his debut against Gimnasia La Plata on Sunday, but he has been ruled out because he suffered from cramp in his first training session and is still short of fitness.

Some of the best CB's of all time have been under 6ft,no point in being a towering lump,if you can't read the game.
