I don't think we should get carried away with ourselves. The world class defender is Varane and with his calm and commanding presence he is allowing Martinez to play to his strengths just as Eriksen is allowing Scotty to play to his. That said it is easy to understand why Martinez has become an instant fan favourite. He approaches football like going to war and it is a long time since we had a player like that in the team. very true but I think most if not all know the squad rebuild is only about 50% completed. |

Casemiro is the obvious choice. He's one of our best players. He's won dozens of trophies. He'd a midfield general par excellence and vocal on the pitch and commands respect. He's everything you want.
Martinez is future captain material but he's a bit too young and doesn't have the same experience the likes of Casemiro and Varane have. But he's a great lieutenant to have with his understanding of Erik and the way Erik wants us to ultimately play and his aggression and energy.
Definitely the legacy captaincy situation needs addressing.
Maguire never deserved to be captain. He's not even good enough to play for us let alone captain us and has won nothing as a footballer and he's completely unlikeable and just cares about himself.
Bruno is vice captain on account of being our best player early in the Ole years and doing more than anyone to get us into top 4. But his influence on the pitch has waned and he is no longer one of our best players and all he has won in his career is a few domestic cups in Portugal.
