I was going to say that your first choice in alpinist should be the green dial 😄. Perfect choice. Orient is another interesting name to look at for beaters as I’ve recently discovered. Some very cool pieces in there. Christopher Ward is a new name I’ve come across recently too. Some very nice watches with very well reviewed movements. Horology honestly is an endless dive. absolutely. the green dial one might be the most common, but it also looks the most beautiful. i had an orient kamasu that i sold a while ago and still own an orient bambino with a lovely blue sunburst dial. those bambinos are amazing and well made dress style watches. unbeatable for their price. christopher ward...took me a while to warm to them as the name somehow reminded me of something that might be part of those tv auctions/advertisements. but had to learn that they are not and make some great watches in fact. i dont really like their logo though...or not yet. i might be mistaken here, but they advertise their movements as "in-house", which is not entirely true as they buy them actually. most of their watches use a sellita movement, but that is a good thing since you can service them at most watchmakers and those movements are very reliable. maybe i'm wrong here. really nice watches though and will keep an eye on them. You’re correct that they started taking their movements from others. However recently they’ve started their own movements which initial reviews are positive about. I honestly prefer they have taken their movements from better known makers for the same reasons you’ve mentioned. I like the look of CW tbh. While you’re looking, keep an eye out for Farer. They have some very nice looking watches if I’m honest. Haven’t done much research about their movements but they look very nice on the wrist. Getting an Orient is definitely part of the plan for me sometime this year. As a historical brand they do have some significance imo.

mate, no bad word about casio. they are well respected and play a massive part in horology. casio still produces amazing watches. i have a couple of g-shocks and the old F91W, absolutely love those pieces. thats also the beauty about watches: you can be into more "high end" pieces or brands. but there are still others around who produce amazing timepieces for a small budget like seiko, casio, vostok, orient, tissot, certina and many others. which one did you get if you dont mind me asking? One of the G-Shock line. Truly impressive imho. You should have seen my face when I relised it auto lights up after dark when you tilt your wrist........ mind f-ing blown! Its the simple things that get me sometimes. Edit: I immediately went to look up what Horology was...... very happy to have learned that. There’s a particular G shock that apes the Royal Oak which I’ve quite taken a fancy to.

I'm not really a watch guy. I bought my first watch in over 20 years around 18 months ago when my phone died while on a hike and I desperately needed to know what the time was. I got a G-Shock GWG-100-1A3ER. It was around £300, which is far more than I planned on spending, but I liked the look of it and it had a lot of useful functions. It took a a while to get used to because it's pretty bulky, but I'm really happy with it. Only problem is it looks crap if I need to dress up for something. So I might be in the market for a more formal watch. I saw Seiko Alpinist mentioned earlier on in the thread so did a quick google. I really like the SPB121J1 with the green face and brown strap, but I just can't justify spending £650 on something I'm going to wear half a dozen times a year. I think I'm going to shop around for something in the £300 range.

I find them to be very versatile and they should be workable in your budget. If you're looking for something a lot more formal, Tissot also has Le Locle and Carson, which I find to be very nice. Tissot overall is a very nice entry level watch brand. The Seastar or the Couturier can be a bit bulkier, but they do well formally with the right dial color. Failing that you always have Hamilton's entry level watches, Orient as well.

Above £10k 1 watch, below £10k 538 watches. Most helpful . Orient have got some nice classic looking watches in my budget. I quite like the Bambino. I don't like the gold one, but the other 3 options are nice. That might be the route I go down.

If you're on Instagram, they've got a fantastic "shop" on there. You can look at each watch closer and they've got prices. That's a better bet. Orient is a very stable choice. Check out the Tissots I mentioned too.

Not a big fan of the bracelet but the watch itself is chefs kiss. They have just released a new 007 anniversary version and that looks beautiful.

Although I'll admit, the orange bezel is a daring choice. I wouldn't choose to wear it, but that's the beauty of purchasing a watch at this level - you're buying it most of the time because in some way or form, it represents you. Ah moonwatch. To be very honest, for that budget I would buy something else. I find it very common among watch enthusiasts. Make no mistake it is top drawer from a technical standpoint.

I think I'm going to pull the trigger on this. The site I looked at earlier only had 4 versions, but I've since discovered there are dozens... So many to choose from. I like the cream dial with brown strap or the black dial black strap, but there are various dial designs to choose from as well... I might have to find a retailer, though. I've got a 9" wrist, so I need to make sure I find one to fit.
