From ManUtd.com
Sir Alex Ferguson is optimistic his improving squad can continue their progression and become even stronger next season. A glut of early season injuries and mixed results left United with a mountainous task to overhaul champions Chelsea this year, but their exceptional form in 2006 has left the Gaffer in no doubt that his side can continue their upturn into next term.
He told his Friday press conference: "I think our form over the last two or three months has told me, the players and the other clubs that we'll be there next year. I'm very positive about that. They are getting better and we should be in a good position next year."
The Scot is still rueful about his side's poor fortune with injuries at the start of the season, blaming them for allowing Jose Mourinho's side to open up a huge lead.
"I think if we hadn't had the injury situation we had at the start of the season, then we'd be there. There's no doubt in my mind about that.
"Next season I think we need a reasonable bill of health from the start. When we've got a full squad playing it shows how good we are. We have good goal threats, three very good strikers who are capable of scoring and it makes an impact on your results."

I think optomistic is right, unless we sign two class midfielders we can forget about it again for another season.
Saturdays game highlighted that their is a big step up to be made to match chelsea. Ideally the new signings will have a bit of a nasty streak, it pains me that we have such a soft team at the moment.
Utd teams of recent years have always had tough no nonsense players, we seem to be lacking in this area at the moment. Cant believe no-one put a challenge in on terry when he was clearly not right.
Its sad that a 20yr old lad is the only one prepared to stick his foot in! Hurry back heinze, and stop fecking dropping brown, he has to be the single most under-rated player in europe over the past 4/5 seasons (when fit). And whats more he takes no prisoners in the tackle.
Players like ruud need to stop being shithouses, get involved more and stop being mard arses. His limited strikes against arsenal chelsea liverpool etc in my opinion is because he can be a soft touch and go missing.
Sorry im going off the point here - just totallly fecked off after saturdays performance!

I'll be optimistic when i've seen the two new midfielders walking through the doors of Carrington. Everything rests on them as far as i'm concerned- who they are and how good they are.

If we can hold onto the players we have and sign some class in midfield then we should be up there.

It's gotta be somebody with class too who can fit in with our budget of what is supposed to be £25 Mill.
According to Spanish papers we made a bid for Riqueleme the other week of 12 mill Euros, can't see them letting him go for that to be honest considering he's one of the best creative midfielders around at present. Also at the end of his contract with Villareal who cannot offer Champs League next season.
Maybe Carrick as the Defensive midfielder? I heard loads about him last season and Ive only really started to watch him closely this season and he's been exceptional. Thing is Spurs will be playing Euro footy next season and I doubt they would let him go for what were prepared to offer.
