Nike are saying not, obviously. But boots are getting thinner and thinner all the time, just so the player has a better control on the ball...but I've heard plenty of old school commentators saying they didnt even know metatarsal was in their day, because players never broke them because they had proper protection by their boots.

Yeah apparently the boots he was wearing gave him no more protection than a slipper! I dont understand why not tho... you'd think that with all the modern technology etc that they'd have boots which are protective and allow freedom of movement!

I think it's the boot design, though in the past they didn't have metatarsal injuries because back then it was just a broken toe. ;D

the thing is that back when becks hurt his metatarsal, people were saying that it was his boots that caused it so Adidas made a special pair just for him with their latest technology. Nike said they wont do that for rooney however

if you watch the footage it doesn't appear the boot has anything to do with the breaking of his foot. it was the way he landed on his foot.

The boots definately have more give in them. They bend like fuck. When you see a pair of porfessional boots its surprising how thin they are.

We can blame it on the boots all we like. I remember I snapped my ankle and had major ligament damage whilst playing a football match. I was out for 8 week, then I came back on crutches, then had to go straight back home and was out for another 3 week. And at the time, I had solid, non thin football boots on. Now I use these top of the range boots, F50+ etc, and if I break something, I certainly won’t blame it on the boots, it is part and parcel I’m afraid. It’s a contact sport.
No matter what you wear, if a 12 – 13 (and plus, if you're a fat Frankie) stone man comes crashing in to you, on your foot/ankle etc, which is rather fragile, you’re going to break something. Wayne was just unlucky.
