From Sky Sports:
"When Manchester United are not fighting for the Premiership or the Champions League, the players, the staff and the fans are not happy," Queiroz told Manchester United Radio.
"But there were three major plus points to take from the season. Winning the Carling Cup was important, finishing second was vital to qualify for the Champions League because we didn't want to damage our preparations for next season, especially with our players playing in the World Cup.
"And thirdly, we needed to make sure that our foundations for a great and winning team continue. We wanted the team to develop, become stronger and more consistent. In that respect the season was not a failure.
"We're expected to be challenging for the top competitions. I think we are in a very good position to chase the most important trophies next season."
I agree, season is definately not a failure. We'll do better next year, but I'm definately pleased with what we've achieved this year!

I totally agree with that, over the years we’ve pretty much expected to win it all, no other club could really compete (Arsenal being our closest rivals) we’ve taken things for granted at times and now with Chelsea around, we can’t do that. This season hasn’t been a failure at all, even for our standards, with the injuries we’ve had and the departure of Keane, etc we’ve done quite well.
Now with the season over, players back from injury (Scholes, Heinze, Smithy on his way) possible summer signings and a squad full of fit players *fingers crossed* I’m dead excited for next season.

Saw this article earlier, agree in a sense, makes me look forward to next season when we have a central midfield and Scholesy back, summer will be great too, we have potentially 13 players involved in the world cup as this shows: www.manutd.com/news/fullstory.sps?inewsid=328522Great experience for all 13 they will all come back better for next season.

Well it's difficult to come to the conclusion that it was a success instead. Two of the so-called 'plus's' are to be at the very least expected- challenging and having decent players, the only one that came as a surprise was the 'plus' of winning the Carling Cup, which if we are honest isn't particularly high up our list of priorities. Inconsistency stemmed from fannying-around with the team selection and formation, congrats on rectifying an obvious mistake. Gold star and lolly for you! Ah well i'm sure he's just trying to be positive, but it does nobody any good to deny the reality of the situation, especially when one needs to change that situation for the better.

After finishing 3rd and winning nothing, they had to try to change something. Turns out 4-3-3 is a load of cack and we couldnt pull it off, but I dont think now, in hindsight, we can get too pissed off with the team being messed around with.
We also have to remember that last season, from January to March, we were playing great football with 4-3-3. With Ruud out, and Giggs, Rooney and Ronaldo up front, it was great to see, and our best time in the season. Ruud cant work in that formation, and we learnt that, and maybe they should have realised it sooner.
Still, finishing second is a pretty good achievement in the Abromovich era, but we need to keep improving next year.

Seccond in the Premiership with no decent midfield plus we won the carling cup. With a decent midfield i could see us pushing Chelsea

even without a decent midfield we've pushed chelsea.. theres no way they should be only 8 points ahead.. and smithy bossed their midfield at old trafford.

How many points start did we give Chelsea? Not surprising we didn't do better in the league. An injury list worthy of Casualty didn't help but there was one really disappointing bit to the season; we couldn't beat teams that weren't as good as us. As a result, we didn't qualify for the final stages of the CL and that, I think, makes it a bit of a disaster. Nevertheless, 2006 proved to be much better than 2005. Losing to Chesea as easily as we did was a disaster. We just rolled over. Similarly, the way we played in the cup against the Scousers, we still wouldn't have scored NOW. But "better than expected" would be a more realistic appraisal. Disaster - NO WAY. Encouraging - maybe. Still got a fair bit of dead wood - I know you'll all scream but Giggsy, Scholes and Solskjaer are not going to play consistently to the required standard again. Now and again -yes but there's a lot more to be done yet
