For me, it's United or reds. Nobody in Manchester would refer to them anything other than that.

It's always been "utd" as opposed to "city" - mainly because the "Manchester" bit is irrelevant as there are no other Utds that are relevant. Possibly Sheffield (as opposed to Wednesday) but teams like West Ham or Newcastle are known as just that. Lets face it - you ask any English footy fan who "Utd" are and I guess you'll get a 99.9 % response that says us. Similarly, abroad we're always "manchester" cos they've never heard of any other manchester teams. So like you said, ManU is used by "girlies" and I Don't necessarily mean the female sex!!!
