There are a lot of shouts coming for Sir Alex to take a step down either now or come the end of the coming season should we fail to reclaim OUR title as premiership champions. Many people believe he is the main reason for our recent decline in fortune, and that his belief in certain players and misjudgement in the transfer market are the contributing factors to us finishing 3rd and 2nd for the past three years. They also point the finger at how the Roy Keane and Ruud Van Nistlerooy situations have been dealt with; sitting Fergie as the sole reason for their departure (provided Ruud does go).
The truth is Alex Ferguson has put the club where it is today building on the long standing traditions established by Sir Matt Busby way back in the 50's and 60's. He took over a club who were living in the shadows of Arsenal and Liverpool in 1986 and shaped it into the greatest team in Europe. Providing the fans with two great teams that will be remembered throughout history. Their achievements, in winning back to back titles, two doubles and the momentous treble will live long in the hearts of those who were lucky enough to watch them. Sir Alex now strives to assemble his third all conquering side to bring the club back to the heights of May 26 1999.
However his rebuilding of the team that consisted of what was widely regarded as the greatest midfield quartet ever, won’t be easy and has been seriously disrupted by one man, Peter Kenyon. When Chelsea were bought buy the now infamous multi billionaire Roman Abramovich, Kenyon was the first to sell his soul. Whilst he was supposed to be completing a deal to bring the worlds greatest player Ronaldinho to Old Trafford he was secretly holding talks to betray his current employees and jump ship with the Russian revolution at Stamford Bridge. After agreeing a pay increase of over 100% he subsequently purposely ruined a deal with PSG over a difference in value of £2M. It was only later we realised why the brilliance of the Brazilian was let go to sign for Barcelona. But the betrayal didn’t end there; United had almost completed a deal to sign the promising young Dutch winger Robben for £7M. Kenyon quickly advised his new employees of this and they hijacked the deal by out bidding united almost doubling the fee, knowing his current side would sell to the highest bidder despite having agreed a deal in principle.
This left united in a difficult situation, the current United side at reached its peak and was in need of some major rebuilding. Having just sold Beckham to Real Madrid ( a deal completed by Kenyon that was poorly constructed meaning we only received £15M out of what should have been £25M ) they needed a replacement and fast as the transfer window was drawing to a close. They opted for the unknown Portuguese 19yr old Christiano Ronaldo knowing he would take time to settle in. United went on to finish 3rd in the following season and again the next year as Chelsea’s money proved to be the deciding factor once again outbidding every club in the transfer market. They disrupted the whole system meaning players were being priced out of Uniteds' reach. The only saving grace was Rooney’s decision to opt for the reds over Chelsea and the board amazingly agreeing to a world record fee for a teenager. However once again the following season as Uniteds’ midfield continued to age, our top target was once again snatched from under our noses by Chelsea. The rest is history and Chelsea’s continual policy of buying any player United target all stems back to Kenyon’s first act as their chief executive.
So in conclusion, when you are looking for someone to blame for not winning the league blame Kenyon, not Sir Alex. With the right signings this summer (provided Chelsea don’t steal them) and the great crop of youngsters coming through, the worlds greatest manager might just prove his doubters wrong as he has done so many times in the past. The fact is even if he doesn’t deliver the title this year, could any other manager do better? I seriously doubt there is anyone qualified to take the helm.
