I was having a chat the other day with an uncle of mine who's lived in Salford for years and he's a loyal United fan.
We got talking about United's teams over the years and we happened to mention Denis Irwin's contribution to the team in the '90s.
What a player that guy was, we both felt that he was always a quite underrated player at Old Trafford, in some ways.
We remembered Ferguson saying once that he couldn't remember the last time that Irwin had a bad game!
He was 'Mr Consistency' in the left full-back position and he was also pretty useful at free-kicks and penalties. Also, he was one of the most unassuming players that you could meet.
Another inspired buy from Fergie! ;D

Yeah, I think he is the best left-back we've had at United, and if Gabi does half as good as him then he'd be a United legend. Another player signed from our feeder club...LEEDS!  |

Irwin was a great professional, and a great player. He never looked for credit, he just did the job, and did it well. And as has already been mentioned, it wasnt just defensively he was great, he could go forward, take free kicks, corners and penalties. Was at Leeds, then Oldham, then us  |

I used to love Irwin, in my defensive duties for my club and school when I was younger I was likened in style to Dennis and I have to say it's the best footballing compliment I've ever recieved.
Loved Irwin, the best naturally right footed left back in the history of football! Plus I don't think he ever aged a day, ever!

irwin is a true legend, never saw him gong down easy or trying to get opposition players booked, a true pro and gabbi will one day be known in the same light im sure
