I watched back clips of him playing as striker in his first season, and Gary Neville makes a comment... "I've never seen a striker make SO many tackles before" which makes me think maybe he ISNT a striker.
Roy Keane in his prime could hit the ball SO well. He'd score screamers. He wasnt a striker though.
6 league goals in 22 starts (31 appearances) suggests Alan isnt a striker either.

Aye you might not but Red Nev did, hence the mention of, 'I've never seen a STRIKER make so many tackles before'

Seems to be a great bloke but honestly if we get too quality midfielders i dont see him playing too much next season, also if Ruud goes we need a better player than Smith up front.Great Utd attitude but not sure where he fits in...

Alan Smith was a striker who Fergie brought in from Leeds!
Smudge was and always will be a striker! He was just asked to do a job for the team in the middle of the park.

I did vote striker but if I could change it I would say various as he could quite comfortably fill in at midfield to rest players or anything like that. If he got the chance to play in a more attacking role he might do quite well, who knows? I'll be honest I don't know much about his passing ability which is pretty key if he's going to play there.

I said various aswell.....I reckon Smith would be decent sorta in 'the hole' between the strikers and midfield. He's a very good finisher in my opinion and good in the air which would give us that extra option so to speak!
