The most successful dynasty in football was the Shankley/Paisley era. Love 'em or hate 'em, and I like most of you hate 'em with a passion, this is a FACT. So why did it work? One of the reasons was that they did what SAF has never been able to do - judge when to get shut.
They worked on a conveyor system. There was always someone in the reserves being groomed for first team action. The 1st team was a machine with 11 cogs and when one cog started to wear out, no messing it was swapped with a ready replacement.
Now our problem, and to me Ruud, Phil Neville and Keane epitomise the lack of skill in this area that SAF has, is that we have a dynasty, and we flog it to death; and then when its had it, we're stuck. So back to Ruud. If you think that Rossi is there or will only get there with a LITTLE 1st team action, then letting Ruud go is right. Get £10 mill+ for an aging asset seems to me to make sense. If he's not ready, then it's a bad decision.
Sometimes, you have to make a decision -or have the decision made for you - which is done at the wrong time. That doesn't mean that the decision was wrong - it's your planning which was crap. Hence the Keane problem. Not that he went - he should have gone a season earlier when he really was like a bit actor in Casualty - but that the lack of skill in choosing his replacement meant that we have this appalling midfield. How the hell we came second with that selection of crocks and never-will-be's astounds me. Which brings me round to Phil Neville. Again, SAF cocked up. Not because he let him go but the fact that he let him go when he did. I'd rather have him in midfield than Fletcher, Miller or O'Shea anytime.
So you can see I don't think a lot about SAF's planning. BUT in this case - Ruud - I think he's actually got it right. Money matters now. The way Ruud played in 2006 was to say the least grim. Why that was doesn't matter when it comes to points. So get rid. And while we're at it, look very ,very hard at the the other remnants of the Treble. Because even if they're worth their place now - and I don't think that is necessarily so - they won't be in 2008. And if that's the case, then will Richardson or whoever be capable of replacing them. IF not, get shut of the Richardsons NOW and free up space on the conveyor belt.
Stop thinking of the transfer system as a quick fix but use it to PLAN. It does seem to me that we are, judging by the number of underage nonentities that we have bought from around the world and then scattered far and wide to play. Stop clogging up the feeder system with "not going to make it's". Keeping players like Chadwick is both pointless for us and unfair on the player. In other words, start managing "The System". SAF is undoubtedly one of the best motivational Managers in history. But if he can't do the rest , get a number two who can. If that's CQ, fine. I think it might be but he does seem to be a "coach" and I think that there's room for a chief coach as well. Get a "Head of Planning" - a Pleat-type but not him - to run this system and let's get back to knowing where we're going in the short and medium term. At least then we might avoid the ignomony of a CL exit before Xmas
