From Sporting Life
"Sir Alex spoke to me regularly and continued to give me encouragement," the 28-year-old told the official Manchester United magazine.
"I suffered that horrible injury to my knee. It was a complicated injury and I never thought I would make the World Cup.
"But everyone at United helped me through that difficult time and I also have to thank Sir Alex for letting me go to Spain and recover from my injury in the best possible way."
After leaving his homeland early in his career, international stardom has come late for Heinze, which is why he has been so determined to play for Argentina at every opportunity.

I was never in doubt that Heinzé would make the WC. He is the sort of character, like Rooney, that never gives up until they get what they want. And, it was amazing how comfortably Heinzé fitted back into competitive football, it was a World Cup match against very tough opponents and it looked as if he'd been playing all season. I can't wait for Wayne to start playing too, Fergie has proved he will get his players to the World Cup if realistic and he has done that, people read too much into the papers and it takes away a lot from Fergie as a manager and a person.
