From ITV Football:
Manchester United have been accused of deliberately lying in an attempt to prevent Wayne Rooney from playing at the World Cup.
A statement released, at the behest of the FA and Rooney, on Friday evening by the two independent medical experts who treated his broken foot flatly contradicted previous Old Trafford claims about the striker's injury.
According to Professors Angus Wallace and Chris Moran, Rooney was able to recover from his broken foot in just seven weeks because the injury was unusual.
"We were able to confirm that this fracture was quite different from the typical metatarsal shaft fracture, but was a fracture involving the spongy bone at the base of the metatarsal," the statement read. "This bone heals approximately three times more quickly than the hard [bone of the metatarsal shaft. Wayne had discomfort in his foot for only five days and has now been pain-free for six weeks."
As noted by The Guardian, 'The statement exposes United's misleading and inaccurate public declaration on May 29 that it was a double fracture, making it "an injury which takes longer to heal".'
Furthermore, Wallace and Moran also stated that, following scans on Rooney's broken metatarsal on June 7, they believed he would be ready to return for Tuesday's game against Sweden.
'That appears to contradict a United statement released at midnight on the Thursday after the scan which stated that the "expert independent medical view is that Wayne has a good chance of being fit after the group stage"', says The Daily Telegraph.
Their comments also explain why the FA and United were unable to agree on a joint statement following the all-important scan in Manchester.
Sounds like bollocks to me, what do you reckon?

If it's true then I think it's rather worrying. Maybe it was the plan though, to mess up Englands betting odds and give Rooney a break lol? Rather that than hearing Rooneys pissed off and wants out or something....

Maybe United were misinformed or maybe United just did not want to get anyone's hopes up and thus putting more pressure on Wayne. Had Fergie or any United representative come out and said, ''Wayne WILL be ready!'' and then Wayne suffered a reprecussion in training and being ruled out of the World Cup. Who would be blamed then?...

Sounds like Bollocks to me aswell, when I broke my ankle, after the op I must have seen 3 different doctors and about 5 seperate physio's and they all had different opinions on when i'd be able to put weight on and when i'd fully recover. Some were saying 8 weeks some saying 4-6 ect.
"Bringing on Wayne Rooney for Michael Owen is like taking a Moped out of the garage and replacing it with a Harley Davidson" - Classic!

I hope utd sue the BBC for reporting this on tv, to have linekar and co call utd liars is totally wrong, if you read the full report from the doctors which is below you will see they mention 2 fractures, they dont say fracture but fractures, one at the base and another underneath, I am sick of the bad publicity utd have got over this rooney saga and the fa are letting us take the flak , all utd are doing is trying to look after a player who cost the club 30 mill, if we wouldn't of said anything erickson would of thrown him in weeks ago and he most probably would be injured now.
Professor Angus Wallace and Professor Chris Moran:
“The Nottingham team agreed that, depending on Wayne’s clinical examination on Wednesday June 7, he could be fit to play by June 20 — the Sweden group match The fractures had involved the base of the fourth metatarsal bone and the under-surface of another small bone [the lateral cuneiform bone]. The professors worked out how the fracture had occurred and that there was also some ligament stretching. We were able to confirm that this fracture was quite different from the typical metatarsal shaft fracture, but was a fracture involving the spongy bone at the base of the metatarsal. This heals approximately three times more quickly than the hard bone of the metatarsal shaft. This was not a stress fracture, which often takes longer to heal.”

That 'Moped & Harley Davidson' quote is top. I read that in The Sun, of whom quoted it from the a Swedish newspaper.

This feels like it's never going to end! My guess is this will go on through the WC and if Rooney looses his concentration and doesn't perform well it will some how be United's fault. If there is truth to it then that would be a shame, but this is not the time to report about it because the main concern should be to keep the England team focused on winning....they don't need this nonsense to divert attention away from that.

Lets look at this from two separate angles: Bone - whether or not they were mended could NEVER be judged at the level of "fixed by Tuesday for the Sweden game" or by Thursday. Opinion, and this is by an admitted shoulder specialist, that this week or that week would be about right. General Fitness - Utd's big scare was that he would not be match fit for what is supposed to be the most competitive competition in the World and that he would suffer other injuries because of this lack of fitness. Just look at the number of players who damage other bits and pieces when coming back after major surgery - ole's the best example of that.
We shouldn't have had to play Roo in the group stages. It would have been nice to have been able to give him a 20 min stroll against T & T or Sweden with us 3-0 up. Instead, because of the Swedish Wanker's ineptitude, he has to come on because there's nobody else to get us out of the brown stuff.
Hopefully, Roo will finish the WC OK. If not , I hope Utd sue the pants of the FA.

I agree the whole rooney affair has been a shambles lets face it he just wants to play and will do anything in his power to do so. Manu pay his wages so England and the FA should be sued if Rooney comes back with an aggravated injury lets face it we need a better start to the season for the new campaign. And England will not win the world cup with or without Rooney they have been abysmal

From The Scotsman:
Insurance fear dictated FA's need for specialists to re-examine Rooney
THE epilogue to the Wayne Rooney epic may finally have been written yesterday when it was learned that the primary reason for the Football Association's elaborate measures to have him pronounced unconditionally fit to play football were rooted in their insurance policy.
The Manchester United striker, who cost the Old Trafford club £28 million from Everton, is insured against injury while playing for England, but, under the terms of the policy, the cover would have been invalidated had the FA been seen to be reckless or foolhardy in their attempt to play him in the World Cup.
Although it became clear yesterday that Rooney's broken metatarsal - the damage sustained against Chelsea seven weeks ago - was of a far less serious nature than typical breaks, the fear of nullifying their insurance cover through lack of proper care seems to have made the FA ultra-cautious.
This explains Rooney's day trip from England's Baden-Baden headquarters to Manchester 10 days ago for a scan and the hiring of the independent orthopaedic specialists, professors Angus Wallace and Chris Moran, to make an assessment and to act as final arbiters.
Had Rooney suffered an adverse reaction to his injury, it would obviously not have been acceptable for the association to tell their insurers that everything was okay because the head coach, Sven-Goran Eriksson, said so. Some heavyweight medical opinion was required.
Wallace and Moran flew to Germany the day before Eriksson intended to field Rooney as a substitute at some stage of the Trinidad and Tobago match. In the event, he replaced Michael Owen after 58 minutes. While the FA's careful handling of Rooney was done partly out of courtesy to Manchester United, it was gone through, in the main, out of necessity.
"We were convinced we were right," said Eriksson. "After a lot of discussions that I was involved in, and some involving people above my head, the doctors decided to come and I was extremely happy to see them."
Asked to respond to the claim by Sir Alex Ferguson, the United manager, that Eriksson's insistence on taking Rooney to Germany had been "half-baked", the Swede became quite diplomatic, intent on preventing further speculation over his strained relationship with the Scot.
"No, vindicated, I don't feel that," he said. "I think it was fair what happened. We've been listening to everyone and we have to thank Manchester United also. No, I haven't spoken to them, but they knew everything that was happening and they approved the independent doctors. But here we are, and Rooney on the pitch. Perfect.
"I also want to thank everyone at the FA because they backed me and believed in me. I am stubborn and I am convinced he could take part in the game against Trinidad. In the end, he did, so I'm very happy.
"We didn't want to play him in the first game, he was short of training and didn't want to risk it. But we felt it was no risk to play him against Trinidad."
It emerged yesterday that the orthopaedic experts saw the original scans of Rooney's foot on 5 June, the day England flew to Germany. They agreed Rooney would be able to play in the finals and this proved the basis for Eriksson's enduring optimism. A statement from Wallace and Moran said: "We were able to confirm that this fracture was quite different from the typical metatarsal shaft fracture."
The fracture was found on the spongy cancellous bone at the base of the metatarsal and this heals three times more quickly than the hard bone.
The statement added: "The England doctor contacted us this week to advise us that Wayne had achieved full fitness and should be able to play in the Trinidad and Tobago match. At his request we flew to Germany and carried out a very careful assessment.
"We both recognised that this was a week earlier than we had anticipated declaring him fit but it is now our opinion that Wayne has made a full recovery and we declared him fit to play."

Sold a lot of papers and kept most pages filled with this incident instead of others Rooney must have known all along that he would be fit to play and Im presuming United and England were fully aware of when he would be fit to play. I think Erikssons getting a lot of sh!t for our performances so far and I think it's unfair criticism. Made the correct substitutions to change and WIN the game against T & T although we should have beaten them convincingly no team have been whipping boys bar the Argie V's Serbia and nobody expected one of the keenest defences in qualifying to get trounced as they did. We have 6 points and must win our group to avoid the Argies in the Quarters. We are a much better team the Germans and should be looking at taking them out in the next round and hopefully it will be with our strongest Eleven. A good win against the Swedes and then beat the Germans and we are well and truly on our way #smoke#
