Aliking him to Maradonna as he was also sent off at his first World Cup and returned 4 years later to lead the Argentinian team to victory.
His mistake ended our chances of going further in the competition although we had no chance without him anyway.
Beckhams form after France 98 was immense, if Rooney can build on this experience and can improve as a player half as much as Beckham did we as Manchester United fans have a lot to look forward too #rock#

After Rooney got sent off, did the ref blow his whistle and say "Game over, England are out" ? Our chances of going further ended when 3/4 of the English players missed their penalties. You're right, we would have had no chance in the next game with no Rooney AND Terry, but it's not Rooney's fault England are out of the World Cup, because his sending off didnt finish the game... missing the penalties did.

I believe it did to an extent Scott, Ultimately it was the penalty misses that sealed it but with Rooney on the pitch I believe we would have beaten them without a doubt inside the 90 minutes, don't you? Picture all six of my bets being thrown in the bin when he got sent off because EVERYONE of my bets included Rooney to score first or score the winner I believe it did to an extent Scott, Ultimately it was the penalty misses that sealed it but with Rooney on the pitch I believe we would have beaten them without a doubt inside the 90 minutes, don't you? Who knows if we would have gone on to win. Maybe we would have gone on to win if Sven took off Lampard instead of Joe Cole? Maybe we would have gone on to win if we played with two strikers? Who knows.
If England had lost in 90 minutes, or in extra time, then yes, I'd agree, Rooney's sending off would have contributed to England being knocked out. But to go through was still in England's hands, regardless of Rooney being on the field or not. There is NO excuse for not taking at least a good penalty, regardless of whether the keeper makes a cracking save or it goes in. But Gerrard, Lampard and Carragher's penalties were all poor (I think theres more of an excuse for Carragher, but none for FIFA's 2nd best player, and the PFA winner of this season missing theirs).

England had the talent to do it prior to Rooney being sent off and I thought that this would be the match where we would have seen all of the players at their best. I even thought Lampard would finally get a shot in the back of the net. Instead we saw Rooney sent off and with that came the most inspired play England showed thus far. They could have beaten Portugal even with Deco and Cicinho playing, just too bad that we saw that possibility when they lost Rooney. Yeah, and it's pretty obvious that the penalty misses are what cost England the match....not Ronaldo or Rooney.

Good point well put Scott, If only we had Scholes playing instead of Lampard. By the Way chaps I thought Zidane was passed it, just goes to show how good my judgement is, he took the piss out of BRAZILIANS - Awesome Who knows if we would have gone on to win. I think blaming Rooney degrades the other players, they played their heart out for an hour and deserved the win without rooney, no one is to blame, its just something that happens in football, 2008 here we come (please no lampard this time, there was NO excuse for any of his performanes, he was easily our poorest player!)
