He NEEDS to be rested, or he will burn out and his talent will go and he wont reach his potential,
Look at Owen, hes OK now but he was our golden boy, Pool ruined him
We have strikers now and and if we bring Torres in we can rest him against the smaller teams, with sufficient cover, or sub him if were winnig, I dont care if he has a tantrum, that he needs to cut out, he cant cry and whinge if hes subbed and Fergie wont have it, he will learn to be part of a rotation he just wnats to play which is understandable but we dont want to kill him

I'd sub Rooney (probably after we'd guaranteed our win - if that's possible!) to put on Rossi, after all he needs the experience to develop into the player we know he could be.

Play the boy when he's fit. What's the point of playing him only against the big teams? What sort of momentum will he build up?, look how frustrated he is when he gets subbed with 20 minutes to go, he'll be so much worse if he was constantly left out against the so called lesser teams.

Well I don't think he should be left out of every game against smaller clubs, but we need to work in some time for Rossi too. If ti's true that no one player is greater than the team then they should all understand that it's in their best interest to give up a little playing time to let others develop.

I dont buy in to this "he'll burn himself out" business. Did Fergie ever rest Scholes, Becks, Neville etc.? No course not. Young players can play week in week out. At 20 years old, playing 90 minutes of football a week is nothing. Even when our CL campaign starts, 180 minutes. Nothing to a kid like Rooney, who strives to play football.
I was talking to a fella who I met in town a couple of weeks ago, and his family were on the same street as Rooney as a lad. His kid played for the same local side as Wayne. When football was called off on a Sunday, his lad was pleased for a lie in... Rooney went around the local playing fields in Liverpool with his boots, looking for a team to play for. This made the difference between his lad, and Rooney, this guy said. You couldnt STOP Rooney from playing football, he always wanted to be on the field.
If Rooney was 29, then sure, rest him. But now, for as long as he's playing well enough, I see no sense in resting him. He's a kid who wants to play football..... which is more than can be said for the likes of Mikel and SWP. Rooney isn't interesting in the money, he just wants to be playing. We have the best player in the Premiership (in my opinion) and for as long as he wants to be out there every Saturday, I say play him. 90 minutes. Every week.

I agree with Scott, at 20 years of age he should be more than capable of playing every game, he's a fit lad..
He won't feature in every match...as Ferguson's policy is to rotate the squad.

I heard that even after signing for Everton Rooney used to get from from trainning with the club and head out for street footie with his pals. At the England camp it was said ( or reported by the media ) that at one point Rooney had to be restrainned from playing in goal after he had finished his free kick practice such was his desire to play the game. The lad is immense. I love the way he runs after a dead ball and turns it into attack. The way opposition players bounce off him when attempting to shoulder him off the ball. He should play, if he doesn't he'll back out kicking a ball around the streets. Rest him if needed. Were gonna play a hell of a lot of matches this season! Anyone up for league title?

Would you drop Rooney? Not sure where ya thread went 7even? Nearly hairless from the way England utilised him already mate. When United are playing well then certainly rest him against the lesser or rather play him from the start and take him off when were winning LIKE WE USED TOO and not have em on the bench bringing him on with 20 mins to go to try and get the result like we have the past couple of seasons with lesser opposition. As for who Id drop him for, Id say Rossi if he's up for it next season purely for the positions he takes up it would be like for like in that sense to an extent. What Id like to see next season is what we caught a few glimpses of at the latter of last season against B'ham at home when Ruud was axed/dropped/rested Richardson, Ronaldo, Rooney and Saha all breaking from midfield at the same time. NO DEFENCE COULD COPE WITH SUCH SPEED AND ABILITY WHEN WE ATTACK LIKE THAT. Brought back memories of the Giggs, Sharpe, Kanchelskis days Which brings us back full circle to "that's why Ruud is off" It just works better than 50yard passes to some poor sod with his back to goal getting clattered from behind. Re the question - if you're resting him, don't do it from the start against "weaker" teams. Immediately you do, you've lost that important edge of superiority and they start to believe that they can compete against the reserves. AND THEY BLOODY WELL DO. So start well - FULL TEAM - and then bring on the Rossi brigade to continue playing the way the team has been doing for the past hour. Make sure your targeted subs - sod it ALL youngsters - get 15-20 twenty or thirty minute sessions a season. And while you're at it training these youngsters - get a 35-40 year old Materazzi as "defence coach" so they know what real life is all about. We might not have so many in the Prem, but there's enough to show the kids what 's what. Let 'em learn it at Carrington not at Stamford Bridge with the Gallas/Makalele boys

Lets hire someone from prison to teach the younguns how to deal with people, thatll have the chavs running! Or just send them to the Materazzi Calcio Academy where they'll learn the subtleties of how to play the defensive positions with minimal injury to others, as well as the etiquette of friendly banter with opposition players...
