Juventus, Fiorentina and Lazio are all facing up to life in the second tier of the Italian game following the punishments handed down on Friday in the match-fixing inquiry.
Unless the trio can successfully appeal against the verdicts, which has not only seen them relegated but also deducted 30, 12 and seven points respectively, dozens of top-class players could be available.
Included among the major names are Luca Toni, Pavel Nedved, Lilian Thuram, David Trezeguet, Patrick Vieira and Italy's World Cup-winning captain Cannavaro, whom Ferguson was directly asked whether he was interested in buying.
Typically, the Scot sidestepped the question, although he did admit he was a major admirer of the stylish defender.
However, Ferguson revealed he was taking an intense interest in the situation and was trying to establish who is available - and at what price.
"It is something we are addressing," he said. "At the moment, we are not exactly clear who is available and what the circumstances are.
"Some clubs might be looking at loan situations, believing they will get straight back into Serie A, so that is a possibility.
"But we also don't know whether players are available for sale or on free transfers."
As said before i think a lot of our summer signings will hinge on this, nice to see Fergie admires Cannavaro, can't see it going any furthere than admiration with what we have here.

Juve will be down for 2 seasons, minus 30 points, ouch, plus if they did loan players out it would be harder, looks like they wil need to win every game to have a chance, theyre gunna have a hard time

Cannavaro would be a excellent player to have in the team ,never rated Rio and Vidic still not sure about.Wes and Cannavaro in the heart of defence too me sounds promising.Trezuguet and Viera can fuck off there names should never be linked to us.

I'm a bit worried about them coming on loan for a year or a maximum of two. Ours is a long term problem in midfield and we'd be back to square one next year with a short-term fix.

I don't think any of the relegated clubs will be back in Serie A next year especially if their star players leave, which would give us a couple of years not to mention that there would be some option to buy the player if things are working well. However I agree that we need long term solutions and not have players that we may have to part with in a few years.

Just dont like the man thought he was far too expensive and didnt like his attitude over the 120 grand contract but more than that he really is not that good,Wes is twice the player.Cannavaro would bring a touch of class to the defence.United need too add quality and depth too the squad.. Cannavaro would be a excellent player to have in the team ,never rated Rio and Vidic still not sure about.Wes and Cannavaro in the heart of defence too me sounds promising.Trezuguet and Viera can fuck off there names should never be linked to us. why do you not rate ferdinand hes one of the best defenders in the world nd even if we got cannavaro which i don't fink we will it we just be a waste of money as we should be spending our money on a player like torres not a defender that we don't need

If you look at Juve' inparticular, unless the appeal comes up with a good result for them they are -30 points in Serie B, which effectively relegates them to Serie C in a cruel way lets face it. Even if at first we were to get people on loan, it would be easy to take them later if we wanted for money as Juve' will make huge losses. Then if you think about people like Viera, we could take on loan for a year or two then he will be past his best.. No need to buy.

i think fergie is bluffing on the italian front.the midfield signings have been sorted for some time. the only juve player i would like to see at OT is buffon.the rest are over the hill (cash transfer wise)or overrated. milan dont need to sell.will prob get uefa cup football next year to keep stars happy.if not anyone of pirlo , gattusso or kaka would be great. lazio`s best midfielder has just defected to m.city - enough said! would take l.toni in a heartbeat and believe if fergie really does have an italian in mind my money would be on toni to replace ruud.
