Once upon a time Sir Alex was a pretty mean goalscorer in his own right, with a reputation as a tough striker for Queen’s Park, St Johnstone, Dunfermline, Rangers, Falkirk and Ayr United.
Here the Gaffer tells us about his favourite strikes of all time...
My Favourite United Goals
It’s so hard to pick out specific goals from my time as manager; there have been so many. You have to look, of course, at Ryan Giggs’ strike in the FA Cup semi-final against Arsenal in 1999: for the occasion, that will always stand out. But there was an incredible goal against Wimbledon in the FA Cup back in 1994 – Denis Irwin eventually finished it off, but I think there were 30-odd passes leading up to it. To score a goal like that against that Wimbledon team at the time, who were like Rottweilers, was something special. Then, of course, there is Mark Hughes’ collection. I can’t remember him ever scoring a simple goal – they were always volleys, side-volleys or overhead kicks.
Cantona’s chip against Sheffield United in the Cup in 1995 was also memorable – the fans were giving him some stick and I just remember him turning round after he scored and just looking at them in the way only he could! Then of course there are the meaningful goals, Brucie’s two against Sheffield Wednesday in 1993 and Ince’s at Crystal Palace later that season, which all but guaranteed the first Premiership.
My Personal Favourites
Most of my goals when I was playing came from inside the box, and I scored over 300 so it is hard to remember them all. My best goal was probably against Real Zaragoza, who actually went on to win the UEFA Cup that year in 1963/64. I received the ball between the full-back and the centre-half and I went to hit it, but as they both dived in on me I just flicked it over them both and sidefooted it into the net.
I always remember that goal, because it was the day of my Granny’s funeral, and of course I had to miss it, but I always felt she was watching me that night. There was also my hat-trick at Ibrox – I was the first person to score a treble at Ibrox! I got it in 18 minutes... I have no souvenir though because you didn’t get the ball in those days!
The Greatest Ever Goal
My favourite goal of all time was scored by a little South African who played for Rangers, Johnny Hubbard. It was a New Year’s Day game against Celtic at Ibrox and he ran the whole length of the park to score. I’ll always remember that goal; I can still see it now. He was only a little lad – about 5ft 6in and as thin as a rake. He picked it up just outside his own box, beat the full-back, both the centre-halves, and the left-back. It was the best goal I’ve ever seen.
