Well Henry used to be a pacey winger! I think Ronaldo could make the same conversion, he like to try tricks and has the skill to be great upfront, I don't see him in a "free role" that's where Roon plays but, more as a left forward who cuts inside similar to Henry, still 4 4 2 but with Ronald and Rooney as strikers. Obviously I'm a fan of Saha, and i'd rather see him play upfront with Ronaldo on the wing, but we should definatley be trying this out pre-season, esp if Ronaldo wants to try it.

Good post, If fergie ever manages to sign a ball winner he will revert back to 433 ball winner plus scholes and carrick, up front ronaldo rooney with saha spearheading the attack, rooney and ronaldo would be free to interchange with each other, this would be superb if we could of got torres to play up front, ronaldo is world class and if we keep him at the club we should be in for some great attacking football BUT this hinges on the manager getting a defensive midfielder so they are free to do what they are best at.

Did Saha take Fulham's penalty's or was it Malbranque?
I'm sure Saha has taken a few penalty's for Fulham, but I don't know if he was the main penalty taker.
If so, as he will be used to the pressure situation, we should make Saha take the pens. If Malbranque took them, then I would give my vote to Giggs.

Ronaldo has always said that his preferred position is the free role that he gets when he plays for Portugal. The only way we'll ever know what his best position is for United is if we try him in all three positions in pre-season. He should definitely be the main penalty taker for us or Giggs or Saha. I've no idea why his short-range free kicks for us are so crap, I've seen him take some great ones for Portugal in the WC qualifiers.
To best utilise Rooney and Ronaldo in their preferred free roles, we might have to have a formation similar to that of Barca (didn't do them any harm last season did it ;D).

That what I was thinking but then, we'd have to drop the 442! Then again it wouldn't hurt to have it as option!

How about this? Van Der Sar
Neville - Ferdinand - Brown - Heinzé
Carrick
Scholes - Giggs
Ronaldo ---------- Rooney
Saha
Ronaldo is often criticised for playing better for Portugal than United and I've always thought it is because he's played in a different position. He plays wide right for United and often switches left to right and comes inside, getting caught out and what have you. With signing of Carrick, we now have a player who can sit there just behind Giggs & Scholes, Giggs & Scholes in turn can set away our three main forwards. It is a risk to be changing the formation but it is a thought that giving Ronaldo a more advanced opportunity can bring the best out of his game and go some way in filling the big gap left by Van Nistelrooy. Would be insteresting to see this in Europe, not sure if it would suit Rooney having to drop back into the wings, as Scott said would make us lack shape.

Ronaldo's shooting isn't good enough for him to play as a shadow striker, he is a little too ball greedy and doesn't have the body strength to play the free role, cos free kicks are a good weapon on a football pitch but not when Ronaldo insists on hitting every one and skying them Roberto Carlos stylee into row Z

4-3-3 would work great with Saha because he is probably the best holder of the ball in the Premiership. His close control and great aerial ability should free up space for Rooney and Ronaldo, so I would agree with the 4-3-3 formation. A midfield 3 of Macherano, Carrick and Scholes would work great if you think about it. Mascherano being the disciplined midfielder sitting in front of the back four and Carrick spreading the ball from deep whilst Scholes can adopt a more attacking role. Saha attended Clairefontaine - arguably the greatest youth academy in the world and at his young age of 15-16 was rated higher than Henry who also attended the institute and started in a 4-5-1 / 4-3-3 system, so 4-3-3 would not be a new tactic for Saha as he was developed into that role at a very young age.

I just think that we'd lack a little width and end up relying on the use of Neville and Heinze as wing backs. I think he'll ( Fergie) go 4 3 3 as he has tried in the past, so some variation on that. I just cant wait for the new season. Gonna have to get my sky dish back up! ;D

Ronny and Roon behind a fit Saha would be superb with Carrick, Mascherano and Scholes behind them, but what would happen with our wings if we reverted to 433? Perhaps if Evra proves himself he would be a great attacking left back back
