United romped to a crushing 4-2 win over table-topping Manchester City at the Carrington training ground on Saturday.
Febian Brandy continued his superb recent form with two goals, and further strikes from Danny Welbeck and Chris Fagan gave Paul McGuinness' side a morale-boosting win over their local rivals.
Fresh from two goals in as many games for the Reserves, Brandy opened the scoring after just 10 minutes as his left-footed effort was deflected in from 20 yards.
City's Gary Breen then hit Ben Amos' post with an inswinging free-kick, but Welbeck doubled United's advantage just before the half-hour. The striker flicked Magnus Eikrem's free-kick towards goal, and his looping header arced inside the far post.
Shortly afterwards Brandy grabbed his second. Fagan held the ball up well before releasing his strike partner, who slotted underneath the goalkeeper to give United a three-goal lead after 35 minutes.
Brandy was within a whisker of a first period hat-trick on two occasions. First he saw a 25 yard shot fly just past the upright, then he smashed a shot off the underside of the bar after an excellent winding run.
If the scoreline flattered anyone it was City, who had posed very little threat in the first 45 and started the second half in finer fettle. Ched Evans pulled a goal back on 51 minutes, stabbing a loose ball in off the crossbar, but within a minute United had scored again.
Eikrem's perfect left-wing free-kick curled to the back post, where Fagan headed emphatically in off the underside of the bar. The strike killed off City's realistic hopes of a comeback, although Breen did pull back another goal with an emphatic 86th-minute effort.
The result continues United's fine recent form, and puts them just four points behind leaders City.
