Kieran Lee headed a late equaliser as United grabbed a point from an ill-tempered affair with local rivals Liverpool at the Victoria Stadium.

United burst into life in the final 20 minutes of what had been a largely uneventful match, with Lee’s fine header cancelling out Jay Spearing’s first-half opener for the visitors.

It had been widely expected that Gary Neville would step up his rehabilitation against the Merseysiders, but the club captain was left out of the Reds’ squad entirely.

In his absence, United’s young team took on an even more youthful look, with Academy star Danny Welbeck making the step up to the bench and Chris Fagan coming into the starting XI.

Liverpool’s traditional cautious approach made for a stifling atmosphere, but it was United who almost took the lead after 20 minutes when Sam Hewson’s shot was blocked by Lee.

Sebastian Leto then drew a smart save from Ron-Robert Zieler in response, and Liverpool continued to enjoy the better of the opening half until they took the lead through Spearing.

Leto’s cross found Lucas Leiva inside the area, and his neat backheel picked out Spearing, who fired through the legs of James Chester and inside Zieler’s post.

The Liverpool skipper then saw a shot superbly tipped over by Zieler as the United defence backed off, but it was the Reds who began the second 45 minutes on top.

Despite plenty of pressure, however, it was the 83rd minute before the hosts finally drew level. Lee fed Michael Barnes on the left-wing, and his first-time cross was headed past goalkeeper Charles Itandje.

Moments later, United were only denied the lead by an outstanding save from Itandje, who made a superb reflex stop to keep out Michael Barnes’ fierce near-post drive.

Both sides then failed to apply finishing touches to close-range chances – Dong for United, Lindfield for Liverpool - before Lucas’ glancing header gently bounced against the United upright in the game’s final chance.

United: Zieler, Gray, Eckersley R, Chester, Eckersley A; Cleverley (Drinkwater 73), Lee, Hewson, Barnes, Dong, Fagan (Welbeck 63).
Subs not used: S Evans, Woods, C Evans.

Saw some of that last night, United reserves play all this patient build up play and pass it around, then Liverpool get the ball and whack it down the other side of the pitch, just like the seniors

no love lost as usual! getting a late goal to deny the scum is always good. hope some of our reserves can step up into the first team and create another golden generation!

that seems unlikely to be honest.

i mean at times even though the youngies seem real promising they dont have the end material to cut in the first team.

times has changed in football, and the gap between reserves and the first team has really become a wide one. i would love to be wrong though and see our youngies become something good for united, but it seems unlikely, we can only see a few youngsters now a days. before we saw a bunch of them.

Before you didn't need instant success like you do now, besides, with many of those youngsters, Fergie was pushed into fielding them and arguably some of them may not have got the chance if injuries didn't play their part.

However, i think United are learning how to give them the best possible education and some lads such as Foster, Pique, Rossi, Simpson, Bardsley and Evans have benefited from big loans. It's very encouraging that United are able to say that that many youngsters could be playing in the premier league week in week out and that's a massive improvement. There are a lot more talented kids coming through as well.

I watched it on MUTV, was an entertaining game and you could hear all the chants so, so clearly - "Murdereeeeeeeeeeeers!"

First things first, Dong is absolute shite..don't see why we've got him did little to impress me.

Second things, the amount of foreigners even in Liverpool's reserves...wtfs going on?

Third thing, Kieran Lee. Captain and inspiration of the reserves, got a fantastic goal. Passing the ball wide and then bursting into the box to meet it with the header.

lol dong is really really bad liverpool are the new arsenal :Pand i exoect lee to get his first team chances this season,good player.in all honesty we should lost that game
