Sir Alex Ferguson said the combination of United’s profligacy in front of goal and a quiet Old Trafford crowd prevented the Reds from making the 1-0 victory over Birmingham City more convincing.
Carlos Tevez grabbed the game’s only goal but was twice denied by the post, while Cristiano Ronaldo had an excellent header saved and another shot cleared off the line. But it wasn’t exactly a raucous start to the new year, as Sir Alex explained.
“I don’t think it was a suitable game for us in many ways,” he told MUTV. “The crowd was dead. That was the quietest I’ve heard our crowd. We need the supporters to create a good atmosphere here because the players respond to that.
“It’s all very well saying the players need to play to get the crowd going, for them to respond. But in situations like today we need the fans to get behind us. At times it was like a funeral. It was so quiet. I don’t think that helped us.”
I'm sorry to say you are spot on Fergie.

Just watched the replay on MOTD and it was quiet at times, but not all the way through the game, maybe because the fans had a good New Year's Eve!!

I was at the game and the atmosphere was no doubt not as good as usual (ok so it's never great), but maybe that's cause the players were frustating today. Everytime they started to play better the crowd got going a bit I though.

Yeh, but Champs League nights are great. Also away matches are a different story...

Yeh I agree I don't get to go to many Champs League nights, Roma at home and Lille away last year I got to go to, fantastic! And I much prefer away days to home games.

I've heard Old Trafford worse than today this season. Not too sure why Fergie picked today to talk about it.
Oi Fergie, get the Champions to play in a way where they're not fucking holding on for the final 10 minutes at home to relegation fodder, and maybe the crowd will be louder? lol.

If we're fucking holding on to a 1-0 lead over an absolutely shite side then what does he expect?

Totally agree with you there Scott! If we played well against such rubbish like Birmingham then we'd get behind the team more.
There is no point deflecting blame onto us paying fans when your guys don't perform as well as they should. Simple: We pay, you play!

The atmosphere was utter shite. The performance didn’t help but the fans should get behind the team even if they aren’t playing well. New Year's Day atmospheres’ are always poor though, most people are recovering from the night before and can't get into it as much.
If only the home support could be half as good as our away support.
Sadly OT will never have consistently good atmosphere unless something drastic occurred (relegation = Glory hunters/corporate fans leaving/major ticket prices reduction etc)

it doesn't matter what your playing the supporters should always get behind the team. The team wasted alot of chances in the game and thats why it got edgy late on. This problem will not go away until terracing is installed in places like the stretford end. Maybe a few were still struggling with a hang over, like myself.

I can now see why Bianchi has a problem with England

Don't even base the atmopshere on 2 minute highlights.
If your team is playing shit, or being wasteful, then you let them know about it. Having a good ****in moan helps and makes you feel better. I just went into a Solskjaer mode, as you know he's one of the best finishers we've had. Even others in the crowd were saying we could do with him on the pitch. Basically, saying we should drop off the vocals because we're playing poor isn't what I expected from you lot.

Haha, Fergie slamming how quiet the crowd is then praising the Galzers.
Makes you think, did Fergie sell his Socialist soul for the Treble in 99?
