Haha, Fergie slamming how quiet the crowd is then praising the Galzers. Makes you think, did Fergie sell his Socialist soul for the Treble in 99? He made his choice several years ago and now he has to live with the consequences, surely he must've seen this coming?? It's only going to get worse. We expected his support, Gill's support, Charlton's support, but we now know we come a distant second to money. Pounds over people.

It seems to be one of his spells of making incredibly stupid comment/ shifting blame to others.

Haha, Fergie slamming how quiet the crowd is then praising the Galzers. Makes you think, did Fergie sell his Socialist soul for the Treble in 99? Indeed. But then anyone that is so close to New Labour can never claim to be socialist as far as i'm concerned. There is no point deflecting blame onto us paying fans when your guys don't perform as well as they should. Simple: We pay, you play! Exactly. Never ceases to amaze me how many forget that it is the millionaires on the pitch that are the paid entertainers and not the largely working class paying fans watching them. Incidently i thought our football was pretty good, just our finishing was poor. Perhaps the next time one of our strikers misses 5 or 6 sitters in a game he can simply blame the fans.

Old Trafford like 'police state' - Fan Old Trafford is like a "police state" which leaves supporters paralysed by fear, Colin Hendrie from the Independent Manchester United Supporters Association claimed on Wednesday. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson compared the atmosphere at Tuesday's Barclays Premier League win over Birmingham to a funeral, urging fans to back the team more vocally. Those comments have upset the IMUSA spokesman, who said: "I think he could benefit from sitting in the ground. You can't stand up to make a noise. If you try to stand up, you've got stewards who are ejecting you, they're taking your season ticket away from you. It's almost like a police state." He added: "If you do stand up, people will take your arm, put it behind the back of your neck and throw you out of the ground. Under those circumstances, what atmosphere does he (Ferguson) want? "The only atmosphere we've got is one where we're a little bit frightened of losing £1,000 for the season ticket we've paid for." The noise level in the stadium as United laboured to a 1-0 win over Alex McLeish's strugglers on Tuesday was non-existent at times, a fact gleefully pointed out by the visiting fans. Sitting in the directors' box as he completed a two-match touchline ban, the lack of atmosphere was even more noticeable to Ferguson. So, just over seven years after former captain Roy Keane laid into United's 'prawn sandwich brigade', Ferguson had his say. "The crowd were dead," complained the Scot. "It was like a funeral it was so quiet." Hendrie revealed Ferguson's comments had not gone down well with his fellow fans. "A lot of people are pretty upset, because it shows a lack of understanding about what it's like to be a football fan in 2008," he said on Sky Sports News. "Fergie's going back to the days 10 years ago where it was absolutely fantastic, you could stand, but you can't do that now." I am a bit pissed off about this. This is the second time someone at the club has given the media and other fans ammunition to fire at us. It is 7 years since the 'prawn sandwich thing' and the f*cking media still never miss an opportunity to bring it up. The Emirates is like a morgue but you never hear wenger using it as an excuse. Yes the atmosphere can be shit but what do they expect when they price a lot of fans out and set the nazis on you if you stand up.

Anfield's 'famous' atmospere has disappeared, funny how when they do shit the fans boo them. Best fans in the world my arse. I don't think I would ever boo my team off the pitch.

The Times calls it a "Silent Majority." Couldn't have put it better myself.
The fans at the ground are the majority. Somebody needs to speak up for these people. No prizes for guessing who that person should be...
Are the Gestapo going to attempt to throw everybody out of the ground if they all stand and chant in unison?
This is suicide. Preventing your fans from cheering for their team, encouraging them? The fans who sing at the top of their lungs are the lifeblood of the club. If you take away that influence, you might as well dissolve the club now.

The stewarding system needs a complete overhaul IMO.

The slightly ironic thing here is that our away support is one of the best in the land; along with the likes of Portsmouth.
I don't think Anfield and Stamford Bridge are any more lively presently.
I think the home supportes are there to be entertained, and flat games do not stir the masses. The point about stewards is very pertinent also; they do seem to be heavy handed and over zealous.
What's the solution? Introduce a standing section for the 'hardcore' fans to inject some life into OT? Stop selling prawn sandwiches!? Performance related pay?
It certainly seems as though the atmosphere is being drained from grounds due to a combination of all-seater stadia, heavy-handed stewards, and no encouragement to spur on your team.

Looking at the stadium as it currently is I can't see where a standing area could possibly go with any degree of safety

My mate was in the Sretford End and stood up to sing but everyone looked at him like he was mental. If the Stretty can't make enough noise, what hope is there for the rest of the stadium?

Looking at the stadium as it currently is I can't see where a standing area could possibly go with any degree of safety Any stand, they have safe standing areas in Germany etc. There has only really been one Hillsborough and that could be argued that it was mainly caused by poor policing and pissed up fans, in this day and age standing sections would be far safer and policed (people wouldn’t be getting in without tickets etc) I don't really see how 5000 or so people standing up for 90 minutes is any less safe than 20k or so people sitting down but then all jumping up and down at the same time when a goal is scored which happens in the present day?

The good thing about all-seating, is that these twats who add nothing will fade away, for the fear of rubbing elbows, standing up for more than 10 seconds and everyone singing, meaning these upper class bastards will be gone, plus loads of Surreyites, tourists, etcs could be put off by us locals who bate a dampened atmosphere.

I know there's a lot of resentment toward the "tourists" who attend the matches because they're mostly quiet which baffles me because if you're there only once then you should want to participate in singing your team on to victory.
