Whatever the "cunning plan" was to attract these elusive world class signings to O T, and whatever the timetable - do fans thing we need to up the ante now?
Day 1 of the transfer season, and Chelsea parade Ballack. Now it seems they are closing on Shevchenco.
25 or 35 million for transfers (if we are lucky)? Not good enough!!!!
We are letting Chelsea take the p8ss, and if we have ruled out F.I.F.A action against Chelsea (which could have brought them to book) plus given them a top prospect, just for 10 million, thats another mis judgment .
I could go on, but Ill leave it at that.

Until Roman leaves Chelsea, they will continue to take the piss. He pumps money in to the place for fun and it’s only a matter of time before he gets bored. We can’t cope with the spending shenanigans of Chelsea and the billionaire, we never will be able to, but that doesn’t mean we can’t throw everything we’ve got at them to challenge all the way next season and the seasons after that, with or without Alex.
I agree, it is frustrating that we’re in connection with player X and player Y, then things fall through, but football is a game of poker, with every club having a hand, not showing what either of them have got, bluffing, waiting for the other club to fold and lets face it, Chelsea seem to have an extra few cards.
Just you wait as things at Chelsea will implode sooner rather than later.

To attract the top players, we have to have a couple of good seasons in Europe. Chuffed with us getting 2nd this season, and I hope we show up for Europe this year..... but after the past couple of seasons in Europe, it really is no surprise to me that we're not drawing in the top players.
If you had no connection whatsoever with United, you wouldn't want to sign for a team that last won the European Cup in 99, and who failed to make it past the group stages in the season just gone. Regardless of how well we feel we've done with the team we've had available this season, it's irrelavent to players who will just judge us on what we've achieved in Europe over the past few years.

I completely agree, we have to do well in Europe next season because the top players want that kind of exposure and be associated with winning teams. Our showing in Europe was pretty uninspiring and the early half of the season in the prem didn't do much for our allure. I may be completely wrong about this but I don't know if just going on a spending frenzy like the rent boys are on is truly the solution. If we look back at 99 and the players on there what was inspiring to me was that I was watching a team, and not a bunch of hired hands who didn't really care about the club. A signing or two for midfield positions should do it and with better service perhaps Ruud will once again regain his interest and allow this team to really gel together.

Playing in front of 75,000 week in week, week out and playing for the most famous club in the world should be enough to attract the best,if they have to think about it they can fuck off.We have everything any top player should be looking for in a club and its up the management to make sure we get them, not always going on about Chelski `s cash...

In one way i agree that we need to do better in europe to attract players, but i'd also like to think that great players will want to come in order to help us to win the champions league, not to just join on the back of us winning it the season before! Reckon if we have a team good enough to win europe already then we wont need the great players anyway... Not sure i'm really getting my point across here, never was very eloquent! Sorry...

The best way to attract players is through success.
But the problem here is how do we bring the succes in the first place to attact the top players.
Perhaps the solution is to get the low profile players who have the potential to become world stars. Kind of what Arsenal do. The downside of that is that it will take a long time to rebuild the squad into a top world side because these kind of players com few and far between.
Also the youth setup is important to help this process of getting back to the top but nowadays, it is difficult to produce world class talent like we did so well a little over a decade ago.
What a dilema!?!?!??!

Another reason to hope Rooney does well in the world cup as well as our other guys.
Players attract players.. and guess what we have the two best under 21's in the world which is something Chelsea cannot take away from us.
If Rooney has a good world cup and shows the world what he's done for us all season and if Ronaldo does the same which he usally does do on the world stage, thats another reason to wait to sign people until after the world cup.
We also have strong Argentinian links, Gabby is highly regarded over there.. as well as Ruud in Holland should he stay, one of the best goalscoring records in history.
You say its dependant on european success.. Chelsea haven't done amazingly well and to sign players such as Shevshenko who are used to playing in the finals when Chelsea haven't done well in europe well.. ever..... = money talks.

What benefits us by doing well in Europe is the exposure we get on a larger scale. For me, it would be the highest honor to play in Old Trafford in front of the best footie supporters in the world, but I'm a bit biased.. Let's not forget that footie is a business and players are contractors so it's not always about club pride but which club is in their best interest to join. We are one of the most famous teams in the world but that fame means a whole lot more when it is backed by success not only domestically but in Europe as well. Why wouldn't we want to be successful in every competition we participate in? We should build a team that can be competitive on all fronts, and not only one which can win domestically.
