Sir Alex Ferguson will make his first major summer signing this week, paying £8m for Chelsea's Eidur Gudjohnsen. (Mail on Sunday) Does anyone think this would be a good signing? I'm not so sure as to whether he is good enough??

He is good but not good enough. If he came he would only be used as back up for Rooney or Scholes, as he is that sort of player.

Hes good, but no matter how good he is, how much stick are we gunna get form the chavs if we sign their castoffs? ? 8 mill? Noooooo, put that + 7 of the 12 mill we got from obi, so 15 mill + Ruud, get Kaka, Milan would go for that deal i reckon

This transfer wouldn't surprise me, Fergie has been after him for years.
i don't know whether he would be a great signing, Fergie record buying players from other premiership clubs is ecellent.
I saw him take the place of Essien in midfield against United at OT last season and he changed the game, he ran the midfield.

He is 27 years old, so age wise for £8m it's a good signing. He does impress me sometimes but I hope Fergie isn't looking at him as the answer to our midfield problems, more of a team/squad player!

Hes definately a great player, but probably not what we need. a more traditional tough tackling, box to box midfielder is surely the prime target

He's a good buy in that he's a good squad player! I think it's a good buy although by no means a priority buy! We will buy a midfielder or 2 you wait!

I think the attraction is his ability to play attacking midfield as well as up front, as Ryan said he would be a good squad player for those roles and the report in the Mail mentioned how he seems to play his best football in the champions league. For the money I guess its not a bad signing.

i agree that he will be a squad player, someone who we can rely on. But i hope fergie isnt going to use him to solve our problems in midfield etc.

Fergie isn't that naive! We will get that new midfielder this summer

Atleast it's not a risk signing, we know he can cut it in the Premiership & Champions League.

ive been going through this possibility in my mind all day today and i cant see where he could fit in.... as i dont beleive he the type of player that would excell playing in midfield (with a 4-4-2), he plays well for chelsea in midfield in a 4-3-3 where he has less defensive responsibilities......unless we bring in diarra to play the makalele role with eidur n scholes alongside him...with rooney ronaldo n saha up front......
also as a striker he is not a target man or "fox in the box" he likes to come deep too recieve the ball...so would not be a direct ruud replacement and rooney and eidur would hinder each other...

I think he will be an asset to us, but agree that he's not the solution. He hasn't done bad for the rent boys and his experience in the prem removes the adjustment risk as is the case with non premiership players. He's a tough player and a good addition.

Imagine if we sign him and he scores the winner against Chelsea in the last game of the season to win us the title. Just imagine what Mourinho would do. It would be awesome.
