Manchester United were on the brink of signing England midfielder Michael Carrick last night after submitting an improved offer of £15m to Tottenham. (Daily Telegraph)
United and Arsenal may have moved a step closer to signing France midfielder Franck Ribery after Marseille declared he would not be sold to Lyon. (The Guardian)
United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy is ready to kick off next season at Old Trafford after making his peace with manager Sir Alex Ferguson. (Daily Star)
Former United midfielder Roy Keane could be back in English football next season as Sunderland manager. (Various)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
this has been the most encouraging day of utd news in the rags for a good long time... and more importantly the rumours are being reported in decent newspapers (with the exception of the star)
carrick at 15 million sounds about right, we have to remeber he was immense last season and spurs have money and are a big club.....
ribery is even more exciting, i had a feeling marseile wouldnt sell to lyon, i think their chairman mentioned it bout a week ago...
to be honest....the star saying ruud and sir alex have made up is the one i hope is true the most....

riquelme CANT DEFEND so shut up about him coz hes no use to us You can't possibly even start to claim that a player who's playing with 2 defensive mids behind him is bad at defending when he's been told not to and has no need to.

for all those riquelme doubters i thought he had a good game on sunday Agreed! he was fantastic and their main creative influence, nobody else was really making much without him. Haven't seen us being linked with him anymore for a little, maybe it will pick up after the World Cup.

does anyone really think that Riquelme and Carrick would make a great partnership, as although offensively it will be superb, defensivly I think we will be left at risk. If you think about it, we bought Carrick for his passing range, and thats pretty much precisely what Riquelme does (look at RANT's contribution on him, I agree with what theys ay, he isn't fast but he can sure as hell make the ball go as fast as he wants). Both players styles aare a lil too similar to work. We need a workhorse, i.e. a box to box midfielder, and if we don't buy one, I'm hoping we blood David Jones, as the guy is superb in that role. Perhaps buying Carrick is a sign that we aren't etting Riquelme, though I beleive that any fee upto £17mil is abt reasonable for him, I think we aren't willing to risk it on him.

requelme 8m get out clause riquelme CANT DEFEND so shut up about him coz hes no use to us Not even as a relacement for Scholes. We don't know how he'll return, he could in my opinion have a very bad start again, and he wont be around for too long at his age anyway and if the rumour is true that he has a get out clause of 8m than that is an absoloute bargain. We DO need a player more deffense minded awell though. Forgett about Ribery we don't need another winger just like we don't need another deffender. If Ruud goes we need another forward, I thought we had Gudjohnson lined up but now Barca look favourites. More sources on Carrick didn't ewant to start ANOTHER thread! from the guardian Sir Alex Ferguson will have to increase his offer for Michael Carrick after Tottenham yesterday rejected the Manchester United manager's £10 million bid for the England midfielder. Carrick, 24, was the subject of the bid on Friday, as Ferguson continues to seek to strengthen a midfield trying to recover from Roy Keane's departure and the demise of Paul Scholes. 'Michael Carrick is a player we are not looking to sell,' a spokesman for Spurs said yesterday, although it is understood that they would settle for £15m or be more amenable if Ruud van Nistelrooy was added to any package, although Milan looks a more plausible destination for the Dutchman. Tottenham's coach Martin Jol is a known admirer of Van Nistelrooy, who is out of favour at Old Trafford after a bustup with Ferguson, while Carrick has impressed as a defensive midfielder since moving from West Ham for £2.75 million two seasons ago, earning four more England caps to add to his two from 2001. Ferguson has also been linked with Lyon's Mahamadou Diarra, who plays in a similar position to Carrick, while Spurs have had their eye on Didier Zokora of St Etienne as a possible replacement.

I think we do require another winger, Ronaldo and Park can do the job, but we do need one more player, as Giggs is ageing. Ribery is more a Giggs replacement htna Park was, and perhaps Park is still more useful to as aas a hi-impact sub.
