Triple summer raid talk intensifies Mon, Jun 19 2006 11:12
United are being heavily linked with a triple raid to sign midfielder Javier Mascherano, striker Fernando Torres and goalkeeper Dida.
Sir Alex Ferguson is desperate to build a squad capable of challenging Chelsea for the Premiership title next season, while avoiding another disappointing early Champions League exit like last term, which has already seen United linked to enough players to fill two teams at Old Trafford.
The veteran Scot's priority is to bring in a midfield enforcer to fill the boots of former skipper Roy Keane and, during a World Cup scouting mission to watch Argentina and Villarreal midfield star Juan Roman Riquelme, it appears Mascherano caught his eye.
The player, who plies his trade for Brazilian side Corinthians, has already been linked with Real Madrid and, while his valuation is around £15million, that could increase dramatically if he continues to shine for his country in Germany.
Atletico Madrid's Spanish international striker starlet, Torres, who was recently linked with a £25million move to United, has now reportedly told his team-mates at the World Cup he would favour a move to England and Old Trafford over AC Milan in Italy.
Atletico director Miguel Angel Gil Marin has reportedly already informed official supporters' groups that Torres will be allowed to leave should their valuation be met and the player addresses fans personally to explain his decision to leave.
Finally, having allowed Tim Howard to join Everton on a season-long loan, Ferguson is rumoured to be in negotiations with AC Milan to take Brazilian international number one Dida to Old Trafford.
Dida is out of contract at the San Siro in 12 months and has snubbed the offer of a new contract which could prompt the Rossoneri to cash in this summer to avoid losing him on a Bosman free transfer
