Lyon boss Gerard Houllier suspects there is little chance that Mahamadou Diarra will join Manchester United in the summer. The combative midfielder has long been believed to be United's top transfer target as they continue their search for Roy Keane's successor. While England's Michael Carrick is very much a name in the frame, it is thought Sir Alex Ferguson remains a firm admirer of the Mali international. Diarra has proven himself to be one of the top holding midfielders currently plying their trade in Europe, with a series of fine displays in the UEFA Champions League marking him out to be a real player to watch. Real Madrid have also been mooted as strong suitors for the player's services, but with regards United, former Liverpool chief Houllier - who is eager to keep Diarra in France - is more than a little sceptical. "I don't think Diarra will be going to United," he told The Guardian. "We hope Mahamadou will stay but, while there has been interest in him, I don't see him going to The Premiership." THANK FOOK FOR THAT

THATS NOT A GOOD NEWS WATSOEVER , IF NOT DIARRA , AND NOT CARRICK THEN WHO ELSE TO SOLVE OUR MIDFIELD CRISIS.MASCHERANO IS DEFINITELY OUT OF OUR REACH AND BELIEVE ME WITH HIS PERFOMANCE IN THE WORLD CUP I WILL NOT BE SURPRISED SEEING HIM WARMING THE BENCH IN S.B NEXT SEASON OR PLAYING IN MADRID OR EVEN BARCA .

How many times do you hear this before a player is sold by a club?...
I'm just going to wait until our signings are paraded a United top and scarf around OT rather than listen to stories of he's coming and he's not

We'll know who we sign when we see them on the pitch in August, till then I'm going to enjoy the WC and BBQ.

Hi. I'm new here so don't know people's backgrounds/experiences or whatever, but have any of you celebrating this news actually seen Diarra play? He's a class act. I've been watching him since we were linked with Essien & was a hell of a lot more impressed by Diarra. He's like a young Viera; very composed, a good tackler & able to cut out attacks well, but also has a good range of passing, is strong in the air & can get forward when needs be. People are harping on about Mascherano & I'm not saying that he's a bad player, but he's very much in the mould of Makelele; he'll do the defensive work but he hardly ever crosses the halfway line. This type of player is suited to a 4-5-1, not the 4-4-2 United will (hopefully) continue with. Then there's Michael Carrick. Again, not a bad player, but a tackling defensive midfielder he is not. He relies on someone alongside him putting the tackles in & then he clears up from there. Diarra has the best attributes of both these players in one package &, therefore, is the best option for United. If he doesn't come then I'll be gutted as I haven't seen anyone else in that role as well suited to United's style of play as Diarra.

At last someone else who has actually watched Diarra play. As I live in France and watch Lyon regularly I can agree that he is a class act. He would be the best buy for United. The nearest to him in the French league is Zokora - but he is on his way to Spurs. I beleive United have missed agolden opportunity with him. As Lyon have signed Makoun from Lille and are strong favourites to snap up Ribery, I beleive Diarra will leave - but to Real Madrid! Carrick is not the dominant force we need. He tiptoes through matches - just like Keano did (NOT)

Don't you get the feeling though that United have been trying for a fairly long time now to try and get Diarra? Rumours floating around about him wanting £100K and a week and snubbing us for Real Madrid seem to suggest we have tried but won't be held to ransom? I know it's only press specualtion but it doesn't sound impossible.

I know it's only press specualtion but it doesn't sound impossible. It seems that way, doesn't it? Maybe we weren't gonna pay the fee they wanted or his high wages (although, if this is the player we need, which I believe it is & Sir Alex must if he's been trying to get him for so long, then spend the bloody money on him!). I read somewhere that Diarra is waiting for the Madrid Elections to take place 1st & see who the new President is as they're his prefered option, but there's still a possibility for us...
