Atletico Madrid have stated star striker Fernando Torres is not for sale following his impressive World Cup. The likes of Milan and Manchester United have already been mooted as possible destinations for the Spain international. Torres bagged three goals as Spain reached the second round in Germany, but their participation ended following a 3-1 loss to France. Atletico president Enrique Cerezo has warned other clubs off from making a bid, but says Torres can leave if his lofty release clause is met. "He has a clause of £41.4 million and anyone that wants him should pay it," said Cerezo to The Sun. "We have not had any offers or contact with anyone. Fernando is an Atletico Madrid player. He wants to stay with us. "Fernando is not for sale. We have no intention of selling - on the contrary we are a buying club." looks like thats down the pan

This always happens when a player is about to leave. Happened with Rooney, Zidane, Figo, Essien, and loads more, so in a way its a good sign.

They aren't going to get £40m off nobody for him and they are in financial difficulty so if a bid of £20-25m is lodged and Torres makes it clear he wants to leave they will have to accept!

He wants to leave so he will leave. He publicly said he wanted to leave last year but his agent advised him not to as it was a World Cup year and he wasn't guaranteed first team football if he left. So I'm pretty sure he'll leave this year.

His contract runs out in one and a half years-2008
If Athletico leave it too much longer to sell him they are taking a huge risk if anything your saying about his release clause is true.

i thought they where in some financial difficulty but didnt the government buy their ground off them or their training faciliies and lease them back similar to real a few years back and now they seem to have cash to splash with the notible arrival of sergio aguero for 15mill+ and a few others (rosicky at one point until arsenal stepped in) so i dont think their doin too bad at the moment but wether their in a position to refuse a big offer is another thing

No one is ever NOT for sale. I think if a huge sum came in. They’d let him go, they’d have to.

I hope to God that United don't pay 41 million for the lad....That would be almost as much waste as the 30 millon that Chelski paid for Sheva

Nah its a good sign, its like a board saying a managers job is safe it means its inevitable something is in the works, as a mid table La Liga team, 25 mill is way too much for them to refuse, they can buy 2 maybe 3 good players to add depth to their squad for that and help improve themselves, as good as Torres is he isnt fulfilling his potential, he got 13 goals there, to get 25 mill for a 13 goal scorer is quality, he will of course do better at a better club but i am sure Athletic can buy good enough players with 25 mill to boost their squad, so everyone wins
