How would you play it if you were boss? We all know Gerrard and Lampard cannot play together in the middle. I think any two of us on here would be more affective than them two. Id have a tinker at this, myself.. Gerrard - Beckham - Lampard - Cole I think Becks is more disciplined for the holding role, and can easily knock an attacking ball up to the front two with out going on a run like those two planks do. Anyone agree? If not, how would you play it?

Sven's downfall is he has no balls...lol! I would play: Carrick Beckham - Gerrard - J.Cole Which means dropping Fat Frank to the subs bench. Lampard is a world-class player but it's quite obvious him and Gerrard cannot play together effectively, why have 2 players underperforming when you could drop one and have Gerrard, one of the best midfielders in the World on top form?

Sven was talking of moving Gerrard up to forward, which might be a brilliant move:
Carrick doing the dirty work Becks - Fat Franky - Joe Cole
Gerrard - Owen
When they´re desperate, stick in Peter "how unaptly named" Crouch to head in a Beckham cross.

(After noting the entry of Parker in the 'stupid suggestion for united' thread, i guess some don't rate him?)

I rate Parker!...he's top quality. He should be on the plane to Germany ahead of Owen 'mophead' Hargreaves.

*if Rooney isn't fit*
Carrick Becks-Gerrard-Lampard-Cole Owen
I kinda like the idea of playing becks center in holding role, his tackling isn't bad and it makes sense with his ability to knock long balls out of nowhere, not to mention his experience compared to Carrick. it's Something Chris Waddle was talking about a while ago.
I like this formation myself though cole and Beckham getting up the wings getting crosses in, if we find we're lacking upfront Gerrard sticks back and Crouch replaces Carrick. Also allows Gerrard and Lampard to push on and do what they do best like this, only worry being a lack of presence upfront, easy to counter.

Downing - Carrick - Lampard - Lennon
With Gerard as a sub for Lampard, Beckham as a sub for Lennon and Joe Cole as a sub for either Carrick or downing.

No hear me out!
Gerard and Lapmard don't play well together cos both of them bomb forward so u end up playing 4-2-2-2 so u need a player who is willing to drop back and play in midfield as Lampard bombs forward as he does so well (better than Gerard) plu it no Beckham Lamps can take the set pieces.
Downing is a better out and out winger than Joe Cole and Joe Cole is all about personal glory and will go himself more often than not lest we not forget:
"I tell joe cole, one more game like that, and he's out of the team"
Beckham has had a bad season looked piss poor against arsenal and he really hasn't done it for england in a fair while, so why not put Lennon in, he's bad a good season he's a livewire and if there's one thing that defenders plop themselves about it's people running at them. Also Beckhams best attribute from open play is his crossing and long balls, and with a forward line of Crouch (who is terrible with his head for a lad his size) and Owen (who is pixie) long balls and crosses are kinda redundant.

These players haven't played together the whole season, nor trained together. Rooney and Owen could return from injury causing more changes in the squad, you can't constantly change formations and the personel of the squad. These guys have played together on international duty for 5ish years now at least and now is not the time to change it when they are probably just about getting used to each other.

There's no chance that Rooney will play in the first 2 games, therefore Engerland must go with a 4-5-1 formation, with
cole, carrick, lampard, gerrard, and beckham in midfield
If it doesn't work then draft in Crutch, Lennon and Downing. Not much point having Downing in from the start when he is just crossing for short-arse Owen.
I would have gone for Ledley King in the holding midfield. He looked good last time.
