Middlesbrough have named Gareth Southgate as their new manager. The 35-year-old skipper has been given the task of replacing Steve McClaren at the helm, as he will succeed Sven Goran Eriksson as England boss after the World Cup in Germany. Former Crystal Palace and Aston Villa stopper Southgate became a front-runner for the job at The Riverside after Terry Venables turned down the chance to return to Teesside. Southgate, who won 57 caps for England, was the first Boro skipper to lift a trophy in their history when winning the Carling Cup, while he led them to the Uefa Cup final last term, where they were beaten 4-0 by Sevilla. Southgate has now been handed a five-year contract as manager and, although he will retain his playing registration, he has all but called time on his professional playing career. Just goes to show you the lack of interest in the club.

No, I wasn't surprised at all. I had heard about it on Sky and figured he would be given the job as they've had a hard time finding a manager and Southgate's already familiar with the club.

Why didnĀ“t they mention the most pertinent info on the ugly geezer . . . something about a penalty shot . . . against the fucking Germans . . . when England hosted the Euro Cup . . .

I ask you, what is the point of the LMA making sure that the qualified manager's get the manager jobs when they are simply overruled by a certain number of club manager's. In the case of Glenn Roeder I agreed because he was prevented from completing his qualification due to the rather serious and importantly, life thretening, condition he had. Gareth Southgate is simply a person that has been thought up and rushed through because all the intended targets said no to the job. The LMA do not keep people out of employment, they simply make sure that the people that do get employed are qualified to do the job. If any more clubs seek special dispensation to appoint from within because of a lack of interest, what is the point of the ruling at all. Mockery!
Gareth Southgate is about as interesting as a pair of Bull boy shoes, he is a player who is proud of the fact that his claim to fame is his missed penalty and that he got caught in the studs of one Roy Keane in the FA Cup some years ago, silly Gareth.
The right man for the job, indeed. Boring man, boring club. He will go on to manage Aston Villa.
