Austria's Thomas Morgenstern recorded his third victory of the summer season in the first of the two FIS Grand Prix Ski Jumping events in Zakopane (POL) last Friday. The double Olympic champion from Torino beat teammate Wolfgang Loitzl and the home favorite Adam Malysz. Simon Ammann (SUI), who landed the longest jump in the final in the second round, finished fourth, improving from 16th after the first round.
In the second competition in Zakopane on Saturday night, Malysz topped Morgenstern by 5.5 points for the victory, with Loitzl finishing third. Malysz, the winner of the 2006 FIS Grand Prix, thrilled the 25,000 fans in attendance after equaling a summer hill record of 139.5 meters in the first round. The Zakopane victory was his first one this summer.
Morgenstern continues to lead the overall ranking of the summer series with 500 points, ahead of Malysz (460) and Gregor Schlierenzauer (AUT; 317 points).
The 2007 FIS Grand Prix Ski Jumping series will continue in Hakuba (JPN) on 8th-9th September.
Also news from the Nordic Combined
The 10th edition of the FIS Nordic Combined Summer Grand Prix began in Klingenthal (GER) on Friday. The first race was dominated by young-and-coming talents as 18-year-old Eric Frenzel (GER), 2007 FIS junior world champion in sprint, won and 19-year-old Alfred Rainer (AUT), three-time-medalist at the 2007 Junior Worlds in Tarvisio (ITA), finished 3rd.
The opening mass start event also served as a successful first trial for the so-called intermediate sprints in the Nordic Combined mass start competitions. Bonus meters were awarded at two intermediate points on the course for the Top 3 (3 m for the winner) as well as at the finish for the first six (6m for the winner, each meter worth 1.2 points). “Following discussions at the FIS meetings in the spring, we decided to test the bonus points in Klingenthal to have some practical experience before the winter season. Whether we will introduce this in the winter, too, will be decided in our Autumn Meetings in September,” commented Uli Wehling, FIS Race Director Nordic Combined.
Klingenthal also hosted the first-ever international Youth competition in Nordic Combined that was open to girls. Over 50 boys and more than 10 girls participated.
In the second competition in the 2007 FIS Nordic Combined Summer Grand Prix in Oberhof / Steinbach-Hallenberg (GER) on Sunday, David Kreiner (AUT) prevailed ahead of Jason Lamy Chappuis (FRA) and Wilhelm Denifl (AUT). After the jumping in Oberhof, the 17km in-line skating Gundersen competition took place in Steinbach-Hallenberg in front of 3'000 enthusiastic spectators. Bernhard Gruber (AUT), who led after the jumping thanks to a sensational jump of 140 m in the second round, broke one of the wheels in his in-line skate. For Kreiner, the 2001 Junior World Champion in sprint, it was his first top podium in the Summer Grand Prix or at World Cup level. He now leads the Summer Grand Prix rankings with 140 points ahead of Kircheisen with 130 points and Frenzel with 113 points.
The Nordic Combined Summer Grand Prix will continue in Val di Fiemme (ITA) on Wednesday, 29th August.

The summer portion of the ladies’ FIS Continental Cup Ski Jumping schedule came to a finish under the lights on Sunday night in Park City (USA). Both of the last two competitions had to be carried out on Sunday as erratic winds forced the rescheduling of the first competition from Saturday night. A thunderstorm also delayed the second competition on Sunday.
Daniela Iraschko of Austria - the Continental Cup points leader after the eight-event summer series - won both Sunday events. Anette Sagen (NOR), the defending Cup champion, was second each time, and is in 2nd place in the overall standings following her two victories earlier in the week in Lake Placid (USA). 16-year-old Nata de Leeuw (CAN) is ranked 3rd. The shooting star of the summer is the young Salome Fuchs of Switzerland who finished 5th and 4th in the last two competitions and is now ranked 7th in the overall standings.
The overall level of the North-American tour was very high. The top of the field has become visibly broader and any of the top ten ranked athletes could claim victory in a single event. The talented young athletes are putting pressure on their more experienced colleagues which promises exciting events on snow. The ladies’ Continental Cup schedule will resume on 11th-12th December in Notodden, Norway.

Shohhei Tochimoto, the 17-year-old Japanese talent, captured his first two podium finishes including a maiden victory in the two FIS Grand Prix Ski Jumping events in Hakuba (JPN) last weekend. Tochimoto is a two-time medalist from the 2007 junior Worlds in Tarvisio (ITA) who was part of the Japanese team that won bronze at the FIS World Ski Championships in Sapporo in February. Andreas Kuettel of Switzerland also collected a win and a second place in Hakuba, while Noriaki Kasai, the 35-year-old veteran, finished third and Michael Neumayer (GER) fourth in both events.
With 359 overall points, Kuettel is now third in the 2007 FIS Grand Prix Ski Jumping rankings, 101 points behind 2nd-placed Adam Malysz (POL) and 141 points behind the leading Thomas Morgenstern (AUT), both of who did not compete in Japan.
There are two events left in the Grand Prix schedule: the series will resume on October 3rd, the anniversary of German Reunification, in Oberhof (GER) and conclude on October 6th in Klingenthal (GER). _________________________________________________
Ylitornio in Finnish Lapland is trying to develop plans to become the first venue to stage indoor Ski Jumping competitions. The municipality presented the results of an eight-month long feasibility study to the representatives of the Finnish Ski Association on Tuesday. The innovative plan calls for building three hills side-by-side, a Ski Flying hill (K 185) enabling jumps of up to 250 meters, a large hill (K 120) with jumps of approx. 140 m, and a normal hill (K 90).
The top part of the in-run track is planned in a tunnel to be dug into the Aavasaksa mountain. The rest of the facility would also be covered to ensure that weather conditions have no impact on the competition results and that safe and equal conditions can be ensured for all competitors. Given the indoor set-up, the hills could be in use almost ten months a year. For more details, view a short movie here. The estimated budget for the project amounts to €30 million and financing is expected to be available by the end of 2007. The construction is estimated to begin in 2009 and last 2-2.5 years.
“The Aavasaksa project is very interesting and innovative. I have followed the project’s planning phase carefully,” said Janne Marvaila, Director of Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined at the Finnish Ski Association. “Having the will to push things forward is very positive. The Ski Jumping Committee of the Finnish Ski Association will review the detailed proposal this Friday and formulate its official stance.”
In addition to the Aavasaksa project, a competing Ski Flying hill project is underway at Suomu, Kemijärvi, in the eastern part of Finnish Lapland. This plan foresees a normal Ski Flying hill with construction completed by 2011. There is currently no Ski Flying hill in Finland. Fis.com

Falun (SWE)
Falun received the FIS Inspection Group on 18th-19th September. Drawing on the strong skiing culture in Sweden, and especially in the county of Dalarna where Falun is located, the Falun Candidature Committee presented its plans for the organization of a 2013 event. Falun has hosted the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships three times in the past, namely 1954, 1974 and 1993. The well-known ski marathon Vasaloppet has been carried out in the region since 1922. For 2013, the Championships concept calls for various improvements to the existing sports infrastructure at the Lugnet Nordic venue, in particular to the Ski Jumping site. Several projects to enhance the general infrastructure in the region, e.g. accommodation facilities, are under development while others are being planned. Further, the Falun 2013 candidacy forms part of the new strategy of the Swedish Ski Association that has the goal of Sweden “to be the leading nation in the world in skiing and snowboarding by 2010.”
The Falun 2013 Candidature Committee is led by Tomas Ringsby, Secretary General of the Swedish Ski Association with the support of Mikael Rosen, Mayor of Falun.
More information on Falun’s candidature will soon be available on[ftp]www.falun2013.com[/ftp] _________________________________________________ Lahti (FIN)
The visit of the Inspection Group in Lahti, the organizer of the 1926, 1938, 1978, 1989 and 2001 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, took place on 17th-18th September. The Lahti 2013 Candidature Committee presented its concept which is built on leveraging the Lahti Sports Center’s facilities and a compact stadium set-up in the heart of the city. In addition, the candidacy draws on the Finnish spirit, extensive know-how and long traditions in Nordic skiing. The Candidature Committee, chaired by Jaakko Holkeri, President of the Finnish Ski Association and supported by Jyrki Myllyvirta, Mayor of the City of Lahti, as vice-chair and Matti Leikoski as Project Manager, also highlighted the plans to place a comprehensive athletes’ village at the Finnish Sports Institute in Vierumäki, just outside of the city of Lahti, and to construct new installations at the sports venues. These include enhancements to the courses, more space on the stadium, renovated Ski Jumping grandstand building as well as new service areas for the teams. To allow more space for the spectators, the TV compound is planned inside an indoor football stadium.
For more information on Lahti’s candidature, please visit [ftp]www.lahti2013.com[/ftp] _________________________________________________ Oberstdorf (GER)
Oberstdorf hosted the FIS Inspection Group on 20th-21st August. Following the 1987 and 2005 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, the German mountain and ski resort is bidding to organize its third championships. The 2013 candidacy is part of the local tourism concept that calls for Oberstdorf “to be one of the three leading venues in Nordic ski sports in the Alps by 2015.” Oberstdorf will also host its fifth FIS Ski Flying World Championships in February 2008.
As elaborated by the Candidature Committee led by Alfons Hörmann, President of the German Ski Association and Thomas Müller, Mayor of Oberstdorf, the 2013 concept takes advantage of the existing high-quality sports infrastructure which only requires some optimization work in the Ski Jumping venue and some extensions to and broadening of the Cross-Country courses along with enhancements to the snow-making facilities. The newly reconstructed park in the center of Oberstdorf is planned as the new location for winner ceremonies and the Nordic festival.
For more information on Oberstdorf’s candidature, please visit [ftp]www.oberstdorf2013.com[/ftp] _________________________________________________ Val di Fiemme (ITA)
The FIS Inspection Group visited Val di Fiemme, the venue for the 2003 and 1991 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships and 63 FIS World Cup events, on 27th-28th August. It was hosted by Pietro de Godenz, President of Candidature Executive Committee, along with Tiziano Mellarini, Minister for Tourism in the region of Trentino, and Giovanni Morzenti, President of the Italian Ski Association. As in 2001, the 2013 concept is based on the use of the Lago di Tesero Cross-Country stadium and the Predazzo Ski Jumping facilities. Enhancements to the existing structures, including new areas for athlete services as well as the media infrastructure, are planned. The 2013 candidacy leverages the experience of the previous World Championships, and the Candidature Committee is pleased to be able to count on the help of more than 1000 local volunteers. New tourist developments are under development in the Tesero cross-country area and Predazzo ski Jumping area, which will also enhance the facilities for the championships. This is Val di Fiemme’s second consecutive candidature after 2006.

The Candidature Committee led by President Janusz Majcher, Mayor of Zakopane, was supported by Apoloniusz Tajner, President of the Polish Ski Association, and Andrzej Kozak, President of the Tatra Ski Association. The 2013 Candidature of Zakopane is part of the general “Strategy for Balanced Development of the City of Zakopane for 2004-2013” which also includes the development of sport and tourism and consists of upgrades to the existing facilities and organization of large sporting events. As a result, many new facilities, including some for accommodation, transportation and other services, have been or are being built. New cross-country courses are also being constructed while the existing normal hill shall be converted to a HS-105 hill. Moreover, Zakopane will serve as a host training center for a team during the European Football Championships in Poland and the Ukraine in 2012 which will contribute to additional upgrading of the sporting facilities and infrastructure.
In addition to the 1962 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, Zakopane has experience hosting numerous international competitions in Nordic skiing. These include 11 Ski Jumping FIS World Cup events, known worldwide for great atmosphere and large crowds, and 4 in Nordic Combined. This is Zakopane’s second consecutive candidature after 2006.
