Heskey's job is to hold up the ball and occupy the centre halves opening more space for Rooney...I think. Certainly it's not for his ability to put the ball in the net. Why can't Bent (a player who can actually score) do that role? I understand he would need a bit of retraining or coaching, but that's sort of Capello's job isn't it? I don't think Lippi or DelBosque or even Maradona will be fooled into marking Heskey at the expense of Rooney. Surely just giving Heskey the ball and letting him shoot is the easiest way of getting the ball back.
Brilliant stats about Chilavert and Higuita SET. Sums it up perfectly.

Well to sum up just put it this way.
World cup final counter attack, who would you rather have the ball in a 1 on 1 situation with the keeper? Heskey or Bent? I know who I'd trust more.

Well, if he can hold the ball up well for Wayne Rooney, then we might have a chance. We don't really have to worry about the likes of Algeria or USA, but more so in the second round, or further.

The beachball perhaps... Seriously, we needed a good player who has scored goals regularly this season, and for all of his reasoning, he might as well have picked David James to accompagny Rooney.

All that stat tells me is that 2 of the 3 took penalties for their country.

Ah heskey is good for holding the ball up and playing in the other striker, so i can kinda see where Capello is coming from. But it does make his "i will pick people based on form" comment(or whatever it was he said along those lines) look foolish.
Id rather it be rooney than any of them....

He's clearly not stuck to the rule that he'd only pick those in form and fallen back on a few players that he feels comfortable with regardless of their club form or whether they've been injured. Personally i don't have a problem with this because the World Cup is not a place for experimentation. If we flop for whatever reason that will be used as a stick against him.

Darren Bent 25 goals. Heskey 5 goals. Drop's bent and brings Heskey. Clever decision eh ?
Idiot !

Freekick or penalty, neither are in open play and neither are responsibilities of Heskey for the national team so i'm at a loss how it's a constructive point of comparison.

Remind me again how many Bent has scored for England. There's always a chance he might do a bit of a Mario Gomez from Germany's Euro 2008 but on the whole I don't think the colour of his shirt severely affects his ability to stick the ball in the onion sack, be a good squad player at least, you have to admit that! EDIT: AND DON'T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT HIS SPURS CAREER, THATS A DIFF KETTLE OF FISH COS HE'S ON GREAT FORM NOW ANYWAY. FURTHER EDIT: ACTUALLY JUST LOOK AT SET'S, HE ARTICULATED IT FOR ME, GREAT STATS SET.

Remind me again what Capello said about picking players for the WC based on domestic form? Who was the 2nd highest english scorer this season?
And given that he has only played 6 england games in 5 years in which he has started 3 and come on as sub 3 times and in those 3 starts has never been allowed to finish a full 90 mins(including the Brazil game where he was hauled off after 54 minutes), i think its hardly a good base to rule him out.
Oh, and he is only 2 career goals behind Heskey in 339 games compared to heskeys 641...some striker heskey is
