Wonderful main event last night. Max is probably my favourite fighter. Think he’s gone 25mins in his last six fights now so he’s surely the best value for money competitor out there. Unbelievably durable to the point that you worry for his health when his career is done. What he lacks in power, he more than makes up for in toughness and skill. Both of them, absolute warriors. I love Max. He's probably my favourite fighter as well. But I worry about him a lot. The dude isn't even 30 yet, but he's got so many fight miles on him. He looks and talks like somebody who's been punched in the head thousands of times. I'm worried that he's not going to be able to function by the time he's 50. I've got a strange relationship with MMA, man. I fucking love it, but after every event I'm thinking x fighter needs to retire, x fighter needs to slow down, x fighter's corner needs to be more responsible, x referee should never be in the cage again... Then I gleefully tune in next time to watch someone I'm adamant needs to retire get their head punched in... I feel the same way to be honest, more so with Max because he’s so young. It’s not like he’s a punch drunk old timer like Nick Dias. In general I vastly prefer the way UFC operates as opposed to boxing because more of the big fights get made due to everything being under the umbrella of one organisation. There’s too many moving parts and politics in boxing. And to be fair, the pay is so shit in UFC that the fighters often have to say yes. Where MMA falls down is that there’s too much macho tough guy bollocks involved. Which is partly because the sport is still in its relative infancy, but at times it’s like Sunday League compared to boxing. There’s more of a tradition of knowing when to throw the towel in with boxing, but in the UFC it’s too often a case of continuing to give your fighter awful advice and allow them to near enough die in the octagon.

I don't think any result matters after Nunez tapping out.
Holy cow.

Cyril Gane thinks he’s Jon Jones but has the IQ of Phil Jones.

I would've bet the house on either Francis getting the finish or Gane winning by decision. Really surprising result. Good performance by Francis, he's becoming a competent all-rounder, which is a scary prospect.
In case nobody else around here bothers with the prelims, you probably should this time. Every fight was at least good, with a couple of them being absolute crackers.

I thought the “evolution of Francis” thing was a bit of a stretch to be honest. If Gane wasn’t stupid enough to try a heel hook in the final round, he would’ve stayed on top and Francis loses the fight. For me, it was such a poor fight, particularly from a technical standpoint. Francis is a lummox, Gane not up to the job. Night and day the difference between that and the co-main where there was all that skill on show.

In his last two fights, Francis has shut down one of the best wrestlers in the division - who absolutely dominated him in their first fight, and deservedly won a decision against the best point fighter in the division - who recently won all 5 rounds in a fight against the second best point fighter. Both of those things would have been unthinkable a couple of years ago. Today's Ngannou is a whole different animal to the one that lost the first Stipe fight. There's no way the fighter that lost against Stipe completes the sweep that won him the fight against Gane. That move was slick as fuck and he deserves all the credit in the world for it.

But he still loses that fight if the other guy isn’t a total idiot. Or even if Gane has more than ten fights or whatever on his resume. Anyway, aside from that, I did finally watch the prelim fights and enjoyed the fuck out of them! The Aussie kid looked slick.

Very happy to see one of the most overrated fighters in recent times, Derrick Lewis, gets his comeuppance. In fairness to Lewis, he has knocked out more people than anyone else. And he seems a decent fella so not sure what the comeuppance is all about. Very limited as an all rounder like, but he’s provided viewers with untold amounts of entertainment over the years. Find Izzy quite a boring fighter to watch. Was never really in danger last night, even though four of the five rounds were close. Suppose it’s a bit like Bones Jones in that it’s up to the challenger to bring something to the table. Otherwise he’ll hold you at bay for five rounds.

I do love Lewis as a character, but he's a boring as fuck fighter. He's got a counter punch and stand-up-jitsu, and not much else. He's almost guaranteed to have the worst fight on the card unless his opponent literally walks onto his fist or finds a way finish him. I'm happy for Tai, he's on a hell of a run after 3 losses. He's not the best technical fighter, but he goes out of his way to give the fans a show. You don't see him spend 3 round standing still waiting for something to happen.
Disappointed for Bobby. I'll always root for him. He's one of the few elite fighters that doesn't seem to be an absolute bellend.

I have never used the word entertained to describe a Derrick Lewis fight - in my entire life. I would rather watch paint dry. I have watched his fights only when the opponent has been interesting. Dire fighter. Adesanya has reached his peak for that division. There is nobody that can challenge him there anymore and the Jones comparisons are apt. He used to be such an exciting fighter but he's now decided that outpointing is far easier for him to pull off than knocking them out - a shame.

Ironically his worst fights have often been against interesting opponents, or when the stakes were the highest for him. I dunno, I think if people come to see heavyweight knockouts, he’s delivered those. In addition to his balls being hot, which was funny in the moment. Agreed with Adesanya. I think Jones is a much better all round fighter, but they’ve both sort of gone the way of Mayweather (especially Jones who has emulated Floyd in his treatment of women too). Trouble with Izzy is we’ve seen he’s not the same force in the weight class above, when he doesn’t possess the same physical advantages. So he’ll now be in a constant cycle of fighting and out-pointing the rest of his division.

While I like Cannonier because of his sensational power, I really don't see him having the ring IQ to beat Adesanya. Paulo Costa has just faded away as well.
