Was he not playing on the wing for Benfica? I don't think we need another winger but maybe he was played out of position at Benfica? Can anyone clear it up? I read he played ACM in Argentina, too lazy to find quotes!

Can anyone clear it up? they play him on the wing but from what i have read and seen the general consensus is this guy is an attacking mid and playing on the wings dont help him much, he can offer more centrally. problem is tracking back etc. if he plays on the wing it'll be like silva

And 59-year-old Quieroz, currently head coach of Iran, has no doubt about Gaitan's ability to acclimatise to life in England.
"From what I have seen, I have an excellent opinion about Gaitan," he told Portugese radio station TSF.
"I do not know what United's plans are for the left wing, but Gaitan undoubtedly has potential and capacity to play in the Premier League."

There are still a couple of 'ITKs' (including the guy who called the De Gea transfer ahead of the curve) who seem adamant this rumour is nonsense. We'll just have to see I suppose, but its not often you get ITK adamant some will not happen.

And didn't CQ champion Bebe?!?!

Prefer an out and out central midfielder if i'm being honest but any attacking addition is welcome.
Everyone including myself seems to be talking like its a done deal, lets cool our jets for a while. Wait till its official.

Always seemed to be on the left wing when i saw him for Benfica. Central midfielder is probably wishful.

The Telegraph are being very emphatic about this.

Just wondering how accurate the Telegraph have been in the past about transfer rumours?
If anybody has any idea...?

I think they are pretty good, if that counts for anything...

Pretty sure he wouldn't be bought to play CM, he would play on the left in a hope that he ends up being our Mata / Silva.

With it being suggested that Fabio could be loaned to Benfica you would assume that it would open the doors to us to do some business with Benfica. Maybe Gaitan is the name that is being thrown around purely because of his hefty price tag so the press automatically link us to him, like they do numerous players labelled with large prices. Rather than going for him maybe we are negotiating for another player, (Javi Garcia) or at least that's what I'm hoping because Gaitan hasn't exactly set my world a light from what I've seen of him (on several occasions) & paying so much for a 24 year old who nobody particularly had heard of until a season or two ago seems a tad ridiculous IMO when he hasn't exactly fully established himself (had one decent season in portugal) & appears to be either a winger or attacking midfielder, we need a central midfielder not an attacking one.

I read a story about finally signing someone capable of playing as an attacking midfielder and I'm disappointed. Curious.
Versatile, (jack of all, master of none) capable of playing anywhere across the midfield but will more than likely end up out wide? Sounds like a United signing alright.

Maybe Gaitan is really just the long term replacement for Park? Oh dear God. EDIT: Anyone think we're likely to bring in a striker perhaps? I mean, with Berba leaving and Macheda strongly linked with a move away that leaves us with Wazza, Hernandez and Welbeck - in addition to Owen and Keane, who is pretty much the only striker in the reserves?
