tip for getting your smithing level up quick, buy all the iron ore and ignets you can, churn out lots of leather strips (all relatively cheap) and make iron daggers by the dozens. your smithing flies up

If you level up things like smithing/alchemy/enchanting too quickly you'll probably end up with either disproportionately strong enemies, they level up with you, or OP weapons if you use enchanted + smithed weapons.
Personally I just did smithing now and again and it still went up faster then it probably should do and it was the first skill I got 100 on, though I have been doing a bit of everything with my first playthrough so I'll probably be a bit more "specialised" with my next character.

The only thing I'm 'concentrating' on is archery. Everything else just gets leveled up without much thought. I'm currently being followed by a woman who is quite powerful in magic. I helped her kill her evil Mother. So now we are wandering about rather aimlessly, although she makes things a hell of a lot easier.

With a game of that magnitude it was always going to get repetitive. Try visiting different areas and exploring caves as opposed to exploring ones in the same area. At least that way there is a little variation. I don't explore all the caves I discover. I will do at some point though. You can hire people to fight along side you for around 500 coins. They make things a little easier and provide a bit of company when you're deep underground exploring.

yeah there's a mercenary for hire in riverwood. after one mission i was given a servant who lived in my house (waaay) and i got her to come with me and fight when the college was under siege - one of my so-called mates cast a spell on her and she became his! bastard
tip for anyone who lives in the college dorms - if you buy a house don't leave any valuables in storage at the college. for some reason once you buy the house the game doesn't recognise the dorms as a secure area and i had loads of expensive shit pilfered.

Ah it still seems like you're enthralled with it despite the cave issues. I have 13000 gold pieces and have yet to even view a house. After watching the missus play her game I've noticed all the houses are situated in built up population. I'm waiting until the market provides something a little more secluded.
Edit. I just noticed on XBL you're level 22. I'm 20 and have yet to follow any main quests.

I reasonably sure that all player houses are situated in the cities, usually unlocked by becoming a Thane for the said City. Not 100% sure though

Oh. That is a little disappointing. I was hoping for a log cabin in the mountains or alongside a river somewhere.

You like it then fella. Heh. I was busted for stealing 36 books last night. Of all bloody things. I wasn't aware that in the house I was in I couldn't take them as all other houses I could. Gutted because I was going down the whole warrior/hero path. Now I'm not bothered and am thinking about raping and setting villages on fire. And they say petty crime doesn't lead to bigger crimes... And I've only just found out you can change the difficulty. You should have watched this video before turning your hand to petty thievery: xD Also, this is why everyone should get this game for the PC if possible: Mods!!! (in this case the killable children mod >.> ) just watched these, funny as fook!
