Sad to read. All round it is not a pleasant situation. Obviously as a player you never want to admit that your career at the top level is over so we should have really put him out of his misery a long time ago.
But a little worrying that he intends to serve his contract until he is told to "go somewhere else". He's lost most of his career to injury. So surely if his surgery is a success he should be looking to join a club that will play him regularly so he can prove he has put his injury problems behind him and is still a good footballer. He must realize he is not going to play regularly ahead of Varane and Maguire and is never going to get back to his best playing the occasional cup game. He should at least demand a loan move in January. So long as he is just warming the bench while receiving a high salary he is proving Rio right.

I would never approach a “celebrity” in the street or in a supermarket even in a friendly way. But if you abuse another human being while they’re with their children, you are a cunt (sorry Stew). Imagine being a real life grown up and thinking that’s an acceptable/funny thing to do.

I blame the morons who renewed his contract in the first place, as much as him still being here aggravates me they deserve the grief not him.

Glad he is fit, hope he stays fit and then can kindly leave in January and enjoy the rest of his career

Tbh, I wonder if any of the managers have sat down with him and make him think about an alternate career away from playing football. Sad to hear, and wish him all the best.

Imagine being a real life grown up and thinking that’s an acceptable/funny thing to do. Bruce Lee’s son Brandon was asked about this stuff before he tragically died. I always loved his answer. He said: “Look, you try to be polite to people but there does come a point where a person loses the right not to hit the pavement.”

Really feel for the lad, has been plagued with injuries, what could have been. Also the amount of abuse the lad gets by some people for simply wanting to stay at the club is fucking embarrasing. Even more so doing it in public while he's with his kid ffs.
Really hope he can stay fit long enough to enjoy his football again before he calls time on his playing career. Just hope a club will take him on and give him a chance.

He's on £75k/w until 2023 at the earliest so there is no chance he leaves unless we pay him off. Whilst I slightly feel for him and all the injuries he's had (he's earnt fucking £15m+ since he's been here), it's just another example of our fucking inadequate the people in charge are(/were) by handing him a new 4-year deal in 2019.

Praying he plays tomorrow and bags 5 goals. 4 assists and 100% pass completion rate.

I'd feel sadder for the lad if he didn't kick up a fuss over his shirt number.
If all he wants to do is just try and resurrect his career, the number shouldn't be that big of a deal. He isn't this club's number 4.
Nobody condones idiots walking the streets abusing him or any other sports person.
But We have all been saying we need to get rid of dead weight. This is the very definition of it. Rio was absolutely right to question giving Jones a new contract yet our fucking idiot manager goes after him for it. Rio did not have to apologize for it at all. Utter nonsense.
We've taken care of him this long, if he can't get past the injuries then there's nothing to be done. It's part of life, normal people are laid off in similar scenarios where they're unable to perform their duties. Why do we get dewy eyed over millionaire footballers?

I don;t get the grief he's getting for wanting to keep a squad number.
As for Rio, he'd had a pop at fellow pro saying he's here picking up a pay-cheque without knowing the full ins and outs. So Ole was right to have a go at him.

So Ole was right to have a go at him. Re the shirt number, I personally find it contradictory to that image portrayed in that article. That he's just a humble guy trying to fight his way back to contention etc. But he's got enough of an ego to hold on to a squad number in spite of the fact that he barely ever uses it? What are the ins and outs? He's perennially injured, never plays, had been paid very well till date. What reason could there possibly be for a contract renewal for such a player? As I said it does not happen to normal people that they continue to get paid if they can't do their job. Rio is absolutely right in his first instance - he's taking up space that could go to a youth player. It's ridiculous that Tuanzebe cannot get a look in while Jones takes up a vital spot. Manager goes on about Jones being a no fuss player and a proper professional - no kidding, I'd not make much of a fuss too if I was getting paid full wages for not playing at all. Honestly fail to see what makes Jones' situation so special.
