it's something i heard, i'm thinking around the time of the tottenham game. first relevant result in a quick google search is from the Metro: "Speaking ahead of United's trip to Spurs on Sunday, the veteran boss said: 'We tried to sign him as a 17-year-old boy. They [Southampton] had a Scottish chief executive and George Burley was the manager and they didn't accept our offer. .'I think they must have alerted Tottenham. I don't know the full circumstances. We made a good offer but they turned it down." . www.metro.co.uk/sport/852750-sir-alex-ferguson-manchester-united-failed-with-gareth-bale-transfer-bid#ixzz29GaV6SGeYeah, so he didn't say AT ALL that Bale was "the one that got away". Sure Shearer and Gazza are the only two the Gaffer has ever considered bidding for twice. That's what I thought. Although perhaps he did say it somewhere else, but I doubt it. like i said i used the first relevant quote i found after googling "alex ferguson gareth bale" maybe he said those words 'one who got away' or maybe he didn't. you can bet your backside he regrets not signing him, whatever happened.

Yeah he would have been a decent squad player for us.

You need to change your favourite player to Bale. I know it's meant to be for United players but you clearly rate him more than our lads.

I prefer Ashley Young. He's not only a good player, but he's also not Welsh and a stand-up bloke in the process.
@ tommy - Amen brother, Amen.

Haven't bothered checking but I remember him saying that he picked Spurs over us because of his chances of first team football. That was what the Spurs manager promised him. Keep in mind that we'd only just signed Evra, and him and Heinze were battling for one place in the team.
Completely disagree with the idea that Fergie feels like he missed out on Bale.
Decent player though, but still nowhere near the quality he's hyped up to be, (yet).

do you rate nani or young better then? Nani yeah. There's a lot more evidence to support the argument that Nani is a top player than Bale. People are just overreacting to a bad run of form.

Even though Nani blows hot and cold he still has better stats than Bale over the last few seasons.
Also as someone previously mentioned, Bale is a bad hamstring away from being 50% of what he currently is, whereas Nani has a lot more to his game than out and out pace.

Just that I dislike the rugby team, the Welsh rugby supporters, the national football team, and anyone from or supporting Cardiff.
