Cheers ginger ! Well I am a biology major so I do not know much about it myself, but from what I can gather, the Higgs boson is THE particle that imparts mass to the proton. So basically, I don't know if the analogy fits, without higgs boson, things would be flying around at light speeds or maybe even more. Very crude layman representation. This is the most ground-breaking event in particle physics in the last 50-60 years. And possibly will shape the future. Apparently time travel and teleportation can become a possibility now as a consequence of discovering the higgs boson ! Fletch, absolutely right mate ! Astute observation ! I had missed that. It is indeed a particle that satisfies all conditions of being a higgs boson although doesn't fit standard model higgs boson theory just yet. But as pointed out by the researchers, it is all in very early level research stage and will take much more research. BUT. and this is a very important but, the fact that there has been the discovery of a new sub-atomic particle. In fact. THE MOTHER OF ALL SUBATOMIC PARTICLES. Is very very real. Ladies and gentlemen, god is a particle. Also a DJ at weekends. We could be living in a very different Universe in 20 years time.

How the fuck are they going to prove this exists...!! . this.... its not like everyone has access to a 10billion euro particle accelerator to do these tests to prove these findings

They've proven it with probability from what i've taken from the past week. You have to remember that this was a 40 year old theory and this things existence pretty much proves they were right and allows them to continue on the same track now and uncover more stuff. There are spin offs from this stuff, people will ask ok we spent billions to smash things together but what do we get for it?. Knowledge and nothing more.

Once proven they'll definitely have to stop using the misnomer of 'god' particle.

OK, I don't know if you guys read properly, but they announced the discovery of a new particle altogether. Not probability of a new particle. They passed the 5 sigma statistical significance benchmark in their tests, and that always means that they have passed the criteria to call their findings a DISCOVERY. So this does not mean that it is probable they have found it. This means they have found it, period. A little more enthusiasm johnboy, that's like asking "so what , e=mc2, doesn't affect me in any way." The new billion dollar industries of the future will have a lot to do with harnessing higgs field I suspect. Imagine the prospects of finally understanding and manipulating the higgs field. And then dark matter and the dark universe and then in some distant future we achieve light-speed travel and then time travel. Keep in mind I am talking about a 100-200 year span of possibilities here. That is , if we all don't nuke ourselves or if skynet doesn't take over...

Well duh! Everything is purely knowledge to begin with. You couldn't make an MRI machine without knowing how it works, could you? Its easy to be critical of expenditure when we understand very little about what its contributing to. I bet if they had used the same kind of money towards building a chain of malls you would have thought it was money well spent. That attitude is very cavemanish. There are people out there who want to help make a difference for the future of our species. Lets be supportive rather than slating them without even trying to understand what they're working towards, eh?

I meant the complete opposite of what you thought I meant. I find it depressing that the some people would consider knowledge, especially knowledge at the core of our very existence a waste of money.

LOL , ginger and fletch I think you guys mean the same thing. Check this out though, via reddit.
"In conclusion, one could easily say science as defined above probably knows very little of reality. There are equally good, if not better, methods to human wisdom. People who have not seen God swear by Him; a scientist has not seen an electron but swears by it. Both are irrational in one sense but, the latter gets all the recognition." -The Hindu

Lol what. There's a difference between seeing something and observing something. Nor does a scientist swear by it, that isn't how scientific theory works. So much ignorance in this world.
@ginger, no problem I left post a little more ambiguous than I intended.

When i say they obtained knowledge thats exactly what they did, there not gonna go into the labs tomorrow and build an anti matter engine or cold fusion chamber but a better understanding of your natural environment can help. I don't necessarily think it was money wasted because this research is one of the things that keeps this country ticking for example.
